If sync is okay, nextcloud is quite decent for photo storage.

Syncthing is really great. We used that to sync obsidian notes.

We wanted a nice photo app to work with photos on the phone, and somewhere else. So we decided to use nextcloud instead. The Memories app is quite nice.

Probably somehow solvable with synchting too. But not really its purpose.

Beware: The Nextcloud Android App is buggy in syncing your photos. It "randomly" skips files. So dont assume all files are uploaded.

Probably if it fails to sync a file, it skips it.

We deleted from our phone photos, before learning about it.

Now I am testing another approach, to find a stable image upload solution.

Make montly folders for your images on your nextcloud. This way you will get faster load time.

Fun fact: If you set GrapheneOS camera to strip metadata, it also deletes the creation date.

This is funny, when you upload it to your personal cloud, and you get images all over 1970 😂😂😂😂

So now I am doing a small tool, that gets the creation date from the image title. Because that still contains it. So funny to delete it anyway.

Be aware, that the date in the filename is UTC, so not related to the exact time (with timezone) you took it.

I saved the gps in most of the images, so the script also infers the correct timezone, and sets the related fields in the image. This will help nextcloud to order the images properly.
