This guy spent over 2 years building a custom board to emulate a drive for this hp85. (The tape drives are very error prone)The dedication to keeping these old machines running is amazing

How do you think a monoculture is bad for Google's interests? Wouldn't they want to dominate the market to ensure their lifeblood ad revenue keeps flowing?

I'm not speaking for Google, this is just my personal opinion but a monoculture invites all sorts of regulatory scrutiny. The Chrome team in particular wants the web open and varied, that's why they work so hard on Web standards bodies.

"Monoculture" is what non-corporates THINK Google wants because it plays into their "they're all bastards" narrative.

The biggest issue is how much power is in one, ad revenue dirtied, hand. If one day they decide to push something unpalatable to chromium they will undoubtedly change the whole landscape. If chromium changes a hard to change api, all other browsers will mostly fall in line.

Also, safari. The joys of oligopoly.

They are very different things and I feel we should acknowledge that.

For example, I think EVERYONE on the web would love it if WebKit actually supported more web standards. The goal here is to get MORE redering engines not to create a monoculture. That's actually in Google's best interests

Yet another post saying "all browsers are Chrome, we must fight the patriarchy!" and I.... just... can't. It so misunderstands, well, software really that I don't know where to begin.

For what it's worth, I'm a big supporter of as many rendering engines as possible. I certainly don't want "Google to win". I'm just saying that a browser using Blink is NOT a Google zombie.

nostr:npub1x05ctt0tr5gh6dnv8qzglj5j354h5w9pggr5cvc486sd2j3d92xslkf8rk that's why I'm asking. Personally I think of it more as mobile-itis, where one platform is just used in a lazy way.

For example the difference between mobile sliders and desktop checkboxes is entirely cosmetic. No real harm there.

However drop down menus tend to be replaced with scrolling lists, which I find odd and a much worse #UX.

There is a debate happening on Reddit where someone is making the point that you can't really be a UX designer without strong visual skills.

Is #UX really just 'mostly doing visual stuff' now?

Of course visual design skills help. UX Designers juggle many skills. But to say that you MUST be great a visual design in order to succeed in the job market feels entirely off to me.

Most companies have both UX, Visual designers, AND researchers (among other things)

I was just in a silicon valley breakfast with some high powered people and when I told them I had worked on "Mac System 6" I was met with blank stares: "what was that again?"

Parents, family, and plumbers I totally understand that's an opaque reference that but these folk? I have no words...
