Konstantin Kisin talks about some of his experience growing up in the Soviet Union here, and while his experience isn’t technically representative of the average, for the average Soviet Citizen, you didn’t criticize the party, for fear of ending up like Kisin’s family.

My dude are you serious? The difference between what it was like living as an average Soviet citizen, and an average Western citizen, was night and day.
And while I don’t know how bad it was for the average citizen living under Nazism, I do know it was quite horrific for a subset of them. Totalitarian rule really is materially different, even if I do have to concede that in some areas it’s not as good as it should be.
My answer would be that it made more sense when most people were poor, and people were more exploited in general. But a loan isn’t inherently exploitative; if you have regulations that limit the rates a lender can charge, limit the recourse they have if you can’t pay it back, etc, then it’s not inherently unethical or exploitative.
Also, it fuels innovation, and that time period you mentioned happens to be around the time things really started popping off (grabbed a GDP per capita chart for reference).

Ukraine wasn’t trying to sell itself as a superpower with the world’s 2nd or 3rd largest military, and Putin never would have invaded if he had been aware of how ineffective his military actually was. Pointing out that Ukraine is also using shitty and antiquated tanks is missing the point.
