Post.news is shutting down, it was a well funded alternative with a focus on news with micropayments. They had a growth hack where you needed to post a link to your post.news account from twitter in to activate your account.

My take away that when you build a social media app as closed source and centralized it can be expensive to build and run. When the money goes away it can’t just survive on its own supported by the community.

Centralized platforms will *always* be vulnerable to censorship demands from the State. It does not matter who is in charge of the platform, whether it’s publicly traded or private, or whether the intentions of the platform creators are good — if there is a throat to choke, the State will squeeze.
