War Brings Out The Best In The Dollarđđčđ€Ł
Israelâs attack on Iran gave the greenback a boost after a long stretch of trouble. But the long-run prospects for the dollar donât look good.
I remain cautious. Any near-term rally for the dollar might be wiped out in the longer term. My reasons for pessimism:
Number one, the dollar hasnât been behaving the way economists expect. President Trumpâs tariffs ought to make the dollar stronger, to adjust traded goods prices.
Number two, the dollar hasnât been following historical trading patterns. Higher interest rates in the U.S. than elsewhere should attract money to dollars.
That difference in rates has grown this year as major central banks have cut while the Federal Reserve hasnât.

Meanwhile:
The economy has turned out both stronger and, so far at least, less inflationary than expected, which again should be good for the dollar. Instead, the dollar weakened steadily until the Israel-Iran flight to safety.
Number three, Trumpâs abuse of allies has raised questions about how willing they are to be so reliant on dollars.
âThe recent policy announcements coming out of the administration have sown doubt,â says Talib Sheikh, a fund manager at Fidelity International. âI would push back on all the running around with your hair on fire about the end of the dollar as the reserve currency [but] something that was unbelievably exceptional has become a little less exceptional.â
Number four, the U.S.âs incessant borrowing to finance both a yawning government deficit and a vast current-account deficit means it has to make itself attractive to foreign capitalâeither with higher rates or a weaker currency.
Itâs likely that the dollar fell so fast because rising concern about the long-term role of the dollar combined with a short-term turn in sentiment on the U.S. from super-bullish after the November election to a consensus that it was time to invest elsewhere.
Even if that happens, however, the long-run prospects for the dollar donât look good.

Esther Perel takes on tough questions, grappling with the obstacles and anxieties that arise when our quest for secure love conflicts with our pursuit of passion.
She invites us to explore the paradoxical union of domesticity and sexual desire, and explains what it takes to bring lust home.
In her 20 years of clinical experience, Perel has treated hundreds of couples whose home lives are empty of passion. They describe relationships that are open and loving, yet sexually dull. What is going on?
In this explosively original book, Perel explains that our cultural penchant for equality, togetherness, and absolute candor is antithetical to erotic desire for both men and women.
Sexual excitement doesn't always play by the rules of good citizenship. It is politically incorrect. It thrives on power plays, unfair advantages, and the space between self and other.
More exciting, playful, even poetic sex is possible, but first we must kick egalitarian ideals and emotional housekeeping out of our bedrooms.

Looking For â€ïž In All The Wrong Places? You've Come To The Right Placeđ„°
In this episode, my guest is Esther Perel, a world-renowned psychotherapist, relationship expert, and bestselling author.
She explains healthy romantic relationship dynamics and how to achieve them.
The answer includes curiosity not just about the other person but, more importantly, about who we can evolve into through healthy relating.

Un DĂa Sin Mexicanos (âA Day Without A Mexicanâ) Is Today!đđčđ€Ł
How removing Mexicans from Californiaâs economy changed from being a joke to something serious.
In the 2004 movie Un DĂa Sin Mexicanos (âA Day Without A Mexicanâ), Californians awake to discover that all the Latinos among them have mysteriously disappeared. The state swiftly descends into anarchy.
Streets are uncleaned, fruit rots on trees while drug hustlers start peddling vegetables as they fall into short supply.
Middle-class people who were bullying their Hispanic maids and janitors hours earlier buckle under the backbreaking work they now have to do. Schools close. Riots break out as baseball games are canceled (basketball continues as normal).
That was 20 years ago. On Monday, it will be exactly 10 years since Donald Trump descended the escalator to open his campaign for president by inveighing against Mexicans who are ârapistsâ and âbring disease.â
The decade since has set California, and the rest of the nation, on a course to the current drama, in which the administration has sent troops to support aggressive efforts to round up migrant laborers at their places of work, while protesters wave Mexican flags atop burning cars.

âIt was âUnnecessaryâ To Position Perplexity As A Bloomberg Terminal Alternativeâ, says, CEO Aravind Srinivas.
CEO Aravind Srinivas positioned Perplexity as an alternative to Bloomberg Financeâbut has eaten his words since.
Put simply, the core issue was the same one plaguing many AI platforms today: a lack of consistent accuracy.
CEO Aravind Srinivas has frequently described Perplexity as a âcommoditised version of Bloomberg Terminalâ and stated that heâs building a âBloomberg Terminal for the massesâ.
In response to the query on a dashboard that Perplexity built, CompoundingAI Founder, Niraj Rajai said, âEverything âlooksâ beautiful but data accuracy is missing big time.â

Water-Treatment Startup Sees Carbon Benefit In Harmful Algal Blooms (Domoic Acid)
On the U.S. Pacific Coast, hundreds of dolphins and sea lions were killed between Baja., Calif., and the Central Coast last year in one of the largest, longest and most lethal harmful algae blooms in Southern Californiaâs history.
An Israeli startup is rethinking how to tackle two of the planetâs most stubborn environmental threatsâtoxic algae that can lead to dead zones in oceans and rising carbon levels.
âHarmful algal blooms can kill wild and farmed fish, make shellfish toxic to humans, deteriorate bathing water quality, cause mass mortality of marine life,â said Henrik Enevoldsen, UNESCO expert on harmful algal blooms and program coordinator of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

Origins Of Toxic Algae (Domoic Acid) Killing Sea Lions, Birds And Dolphins In Southern California
Lately, scientists are observing that the oceans have are taking on additional amounts of carbon dioxide beyond natural levels due to societal use of fossil fuels.
This and rising ocean temperatures mean that domoic acid events are becoming more prevalent, more toxic, and lasting longer than in previous decades. Scripps researchers then used the results of Hutchinsâ study to identify the genes responsible for the production of this toxin.
A team led by scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) has uncovered the genetic basis for the production of domoic acid, a potent neurotoxin produced by harmful algal blooms.
The study, âBiosynthesis of the neurotoxin domoic acid in a bloom-forming diatom,â was five years in the making. In addition to funding from the National Science Foundation, the research was supported by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (Grant number R01ES030316), part of the National Institutes of Health; the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation; and the U.S. Department of Energy.

What Elon Musk Couldâve Learned From The Worldâs âFirst DOGEâ
Elon Musk may think of himself as a revolutionary wielding his metaphorical chainsaw through the thickets of federal spending, shuttering departments, cutting programs and firing staff.
For as long as there have been governments, there have been those whose job is to fight waste and fraud.
And while Muskâs methods may be novel, not least in their disregard for the inconveniences of employment law, his approach harks back to an earlier era â completely ignoring its lessons.
The great pioneer of government efficiency in modern times was William Gladstone.
For the 19th century British statesman, government efficiency was not just a political objective but a moral obsession.
Gladstoneâs response was the 1866 Exchequer and Audit Departments Act, which created what one could think of as the worldâs first DOGE.
Margaret Thatcher, in particular, blamed civil service wastefulness on poor leadership and a lack of private-sector discipline.
At her first cabinet meeting in 1979, the prime minister instructed ministers to freeze all civil service recruitment, conduct âurgent examinations of functions to secure reductions in civil service manpower,â and âmake it their personal responsibility to pursue the promotion of efficiency and elimination of waste.â

Trump Manufactures A Crisis In L.A. To Distract From Missing White House Economic Forecastsđčđđ€Ł
Last Friday, when President Donald Trumpâs 2026 full budget was released he conveniently forgot the actual economic forecasts.đ”âđ«đđ€Ź
âIt is exceedingly rare, and even unheard of, for the White House to propose major economic policies without presenting Congress with projection baselines for the economy,â said Jessica Riedl, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a former Republican Senate staff member.

* Budget Deficit Grows While Stocks And Bond Yields Fall, Negative Interest Rates Spread!
Riedl says, âIf the White House is confident in its economic predictions, it should put out a detailed explanation and breakdown of the sub-factors that comprise them.â
Michael Feroli, chief US economist at JPMorgan Chase, says, âIt doesnât look good. Just hard to understand how you can project things like tax revenues without projecting national income.â
The White House said it would only release projections â which span gauges from GDP and interest rates to the fiscal deficit and debt â after Congress passes Trumpâs tax bill.
âIt would not be accurate or appropriate to estimate deficits while Congress and the president are still negotiating,â said Rachel Cauley, the Office of Management and Budgetâs communications director.
A giant pending tax bill didnât prevent Trumpâs first administration from releasing forecasts in May 2017.
Riedl also points out that Barack Obama, taking office in 2009 during the financial crisis and a deep recession, still offered preliminary projections, in February, before enacting his stimulus package.
