Not necessarily just the range either, even human eyes need to adjust themselves to low light levels for a good 15-30 minutes before we start seeing the majority of stars. If you look down or at a light for even a second you reset your eyes and have to do it again.

Eyes are just high tech bio-cameras and astronomy is fucky, man.
