Currently chilling at a cafe at midnight in some Red Sea coastal town five hours south of Cairo.

A doctor from Syria recognizes me and comes to talk. He is briefly here in Egypt but works in Syria treating people.

He and his colleagues use the informal Hawala system to move money for legitimate purposes, because Syria is sanctioned by the US. The Hawala system is ancient, stretching back to the medieval Silk Road and prior, but is still used today in many regions. He’s a fan of Bitcoin obviously.

So many people in the developed world take money for granted. But people in developing regions or conflict regions often have a better appreciation of permissionless money, undebaseable money, etc.

A shocking number of people email me and ask about bitcoin price predictions over the next 3-9 months or so.

They’re generally along the lines of, “Okay, but what do you think the odds are that we have a big recession, get a liquify shock, and bitcoin retests $30k? I read this article by [insert macro permabear] and he said that…”

I’m going to start replying with nothing but my pictures of beaches or something. Very few people build wealth by trying to catch every twist and turn of the market. Focus on long-term trends.

On our multi-hour trip to the airport (heading to Oslo soon), my husband and I had a long debate about fiat and bitcoin. I love this sort of thing.

He is super bullish on bitcoin, but has somewhat lower expectations than me for its total market size and importance in the long run. But more importantly, he is a really good debater and can steelman fiat arguments better than most of the actual fiat proponents can, so it’s very useful iterative process for me to keep sparring his arguments and refine how I describe things for maximum clarity and impact. He also edits all of my long-form articles and edited my book, so he serves as my first line of defense to make sure everything I write can pass a certain muster outside of my own echo chamber.

It’s really important to do this sort of thing. Debate with people you like but where you see some things differently, and assess how it all checks out.
