South Africa’s MoneyBadgers

It is possible but really a marginal iteration that requires a ton of effort. We can solve it today if merchants are willing to buy new hardware, but it doesn’t scale well.

Exactly, Bitcoin payments overlap with most of the central bank’s goals like bringing down the cost of payments, promoting financial inclusion and implementing interoperable systems. There are, however, some aspects that do not overlap.

Yeah it’s a bit misleading.. Shell is not accepting bitcoin. They’re accepting fiat. The customer is paying with bitcoin to nostr:nprofile1qqsz85k206vm3vqdmlvcy9l4kyfqchlnf4hnctasxufa3ph0ck9decgpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3gamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wdau8gu3wv3jhv7mfdcp who pays the fiat to the zapper QR on their behalf..

Which is still awesome for adoption because anyone can pay with bitcoin but it’s not like Shell or Bootleggers or Wimpy are *accepting* bitcoin.

They are accepting Bitcoin payments as an option, but they are receiving settlement in fiat (Rands).

MoneyBadger is running the Bitcoin Coffee Bounty Hunt across South Africa in partnership with Bootlegger, a national coffee shop chain with over 85 locations now accepting Bitcoin via our bridge. Customers can pay by scanning their bill directly with Blink wallet, with Aqua (hopefully) coming soon and more wallets to follow, or with any Lightning wallet using the MoneyBadger scanner app and deeplinking.

Dedicated bounty hunters are already in action: more than 10% of Bootlegger outlets have been successfully claimed and “orange-pilled,” with staff personally shown how Bitcoin payments work.

We are now turning the Coffee Bounty Hunt into a competitive game between teams. To fuel the excitement, we are seeking sponsorship for prizes for the winning team. MoneyBadger is already funding each bounty at $3 plus 25,000 sats per meetup, which are hosted by local Bitcoiners at their nearest Bootlegger location.

Witsand is a remote South African seaside village next to the Breede river estuary.
