In practice it's easier and more robust to train to be strong. It's impossible for most not to feel afraid, but overcoming fear is a skill that can be developed.
Are privacy advocates simply traumatized by mass society? They've been beaten down and abandoned, so it's natural to distance themselves from the abuser. In this case it's the enforcer part of mass society.
I see this in many "normal" people too. They're afraid of everything. A good example is those fake cameras in Walmart. They installed them just to promote fear. Perhaps folks like Snowden are Walmart cameras?

The American credit score is only mildly different from the Chinese social credit score. KYC is basically Internet ID / digital ID. Most currencies are already 90% digital.
So what's the panic about the totalitarian control? This is done cause it's useful and convenient.
Physical ID and cash are not going away. Infrastructure is not that great and widespread, and in events like a power outage, those are excellent backup choices.
