It is not just the kids identifying, but the society that goes along with it. The full-grown adults that suddenly think this is o.k.
Demonic deception.
Team work makes the dream work.
Husband and I moved over 600 pounds of hay from the barn to the field using available resources - mostly our hard work.
We are both in our 50's and grateful to be able to be this active. I am thankful Jeremy is so strong.
The saturated ground made things a bit messy. Instead of drive the truck in the field we had to lay down straw and roll it through the gate.
Love working beside this guy!

Beautiful sunrise.
Last Thursday our low was -8F with 8 inches of snow on the ground.
This morning it is 55F and the ground is saturated with melted snow and a few inches of rain.
Each sun rise was beautiful.
Appreciate where you are.
Adapt to your circumstances.
Always move forward.
The sun always rises

Some buy "beans & bullets". We buy milk cows.
We welcomed Gracie and her adopted calf. Daisy to the farm.
Here they are getting to know the rest of the herd.

Spending some time today marking out my seed starting and transplant dates for this year's garden.
This year I am trying something new:
Planting by the phases of the moon.
I used the Farmer's Almanac online resource to sort this out. I put in my zip code and it generated a chart with all the dates I needed.
As a gardener you are always learning and experimenting. We will see what this year brings.

Glad you enjoyed it! Sounds like a yummy meal.
Another freezing night. Down to -2F.
Gave the girls a homemade suet block this afternoon to help keep them warm.
Throughout the year I take leftover fats from cooking meat, pour it in to a pie tin, add oats and scratch, then freeze it to use in the winter.
Like today.

Interesting. We soak our feed 24hrs, but don't ferment. And I'm sure you increase her feed as she gets close to farrowing. Bummer about the loss. Our Large Black is on her third farrow. This time we let her farrow in the woods with the boar in the same paddock. It worked well. Six survivors out of 9 born.
Good luck with the other girls.

Love this. When my boys were little we did the same. The elderly love the connection to kids and the kids learn how to help.
nostr:npub19sjwrt6hr76velk28xqkf8qmp8rftnvrky5hp84nksw84559fzvsq7ccqn tagging you here for homesteading and pigs, though none of yours have eaten their young.
We usually loose a few because they wander from the pack and freeze/starve. Also losses to crushing, but our mama's have not eaten their young.
Definitely cull the sow. Wait for her mammary glands to subside (a couple weeks)
I would be interested to know what you research is telling you on why she is eating the m.
Not knowing how you keep them, my guess would be she doesn't have enough nutrition. But that is just a guess.
Also, first litter? For our sows' first litter we isolated/gave them a separate space so their instincts could kick in.
We are pretty hands off with the piglets and if they survive the first week you are in good shape.
There is a reason they have so many babies.
This afternoon:
"Jeremy, why don't you give Ted a call and see if they need anything."
(Our county has been pretty much snowed in for the last week and we are getting down to -2F tonight. Ted and Helen are in their later 80's, they have a 1/4 mile unpaved driveway and heat their house with a woodstove. I'm sure there is some way we can help)
We immediately find out that they have run out of scratch for their chickens.
I send Jeremy over with 2 large Ziploc bags of scratch, a loaf of banana bread, and a jar of homemade tomato basil soup.
While visiting Jeremy gets the scratch out to the barn and feeds some to the chickens. He then helps Ted restock the firewood at the house. Ted had already fallen three times trying to move wood in a wheel barrow across the snow.
Jeremy returns home with a jar of Ted's honey and a bottle of wine.
This is community.
Take care of eachother.

You could make an MRE type meal with a freeze drier. I have pressure canned "ready to heat" meals with delicious success. I have also dehydrated veggies to be added to soups and meals.
I switched over to Fountain when Stitcher bit the dust.
