The Cars - The Cars

Just decided to re-compare against the new Rhino release, which is, indeed, better than my original. But this, my original, is really good. I remain pleased with my younger self's record care...45 years later and nary a pop, and the cover's great.

Weisenheimer brainstorm indeed, Mr. Ocasek.

nostr:npub10kafxgmc528dkcy7cy855kyld042j6hlka4jyeutqgf4pu7zvl4qzfgfg4 It is definitely not a spy movie. :-)

After you watch the movie, you can read the wikipedia page which talks about that explosion.

Also, that isn't remotely the most dangerous looking thing in the movie…and I will say no more, since you will know when you come to it.

nostr:npub10kafxgmc528dkcy7cy855kyld042j6hlka4jyeutqgf4pu7zvl4qzfgfg4 I hadn't seen the trailer since, well, probably 1977. (I watched this one - https://youtu.be/3BDbIzovuos?si=uLi3zOThklci_rlP).

It's not that the trailer is "inaccurate", exactly, or even terribly misleading. The first hour introduces the four men they mention, separately - and the first 3/4 of the trailer or so is that. The rest of the movie is the "rest of the story”.

It doesn't really give an idea how the movie "feels", though, at all.

(One truck is named "Sorcerer”, FYI.)

Amanda Shires - Live from Studio A

Shires backed by her husband, Jason Isbell, and their band, with a short live set for RSD2023. They're both great writers and musicians, and bring out the best in each other...

Has it really been 30 years since the release of the Newton? Jeez... the original rollout was done at Symphony Hall in Boston, right near where I lived at the time. I honestly can't remember if I was in the audience or not...

Warren Zevon - Stand in the Fire

While I didn't see him at *this* show, I did see him at the Living Room in Providence during this tour, and Stand in the Fire is a really good representation of how great Zevon and the band were playing back then.

Speaker's Corner did a nice job mastering and pressing this version, too, as compared to my original.

Highly Recommended.

Stan Getz & Bill Evans

This LP was recorded in 1964 but shelved until 1973. I'm not quite sure why...but it's kind of what you'd expect from that particular "cool jazz" team-up...a mellow affair.

Nicely recorded by Rudy van Gelder and given a flat, quiet pressing (at GZ, I think).

Ryu Fukui - A Letter from Slowboat

I've held off playing this, because it's Fukui's last recorded work, recorded at Slowboat with the trio he'd been playing with for 10 years. I shouldn't have waited, because it's great - I'm so glad his wife, Yasuko, encouraged him to record it.

It's not a RvG recording--it doesn't have that sense of space--but it's a great representation of what it must have sounded like there.

Another nice pressing from WRWTFWW's Jazz imprint.

nostr:npub1fq5n4rmpw4utt792v8fhv4cp8rmg79fyqlcdws9kxeaq5pkjwcysaep8du Unfortunately, used 80s jazz presses like OJC are not easy to find in my area. 😢 There are plenty of the new grey market labels like Waxtime filling the bins, but I won't buy those.

David Bowie - Scary Monsters

If Numan aped Bowie's Berlin-era act on The Pleasure Principle, Bowie himself left the 70s with Scary Monsters. He nailed it, with a mix of experimental, commercial, aggressive, and sometimes dissonant tracks. It's a "greatest hits" of the whole decade, but with all new songs. A fallow-but-commercial period follows this...

My original copy from 1980 (which was clearly imported from the Phillipines by the store I bought it from).

nostr:npub1fq5n4rmpw4utt792v8fhv4cp8rmg79fyqlcdws9kxeaq5pkjwcysaep8du well it was my birthday a while back. Kids go me a voucher for one of my favourite Australian online #vinyl stores. So ordered this. Prob take a few weeks to come.

nostr:npub1fq5n4rmpw4utt792v8fhv4cp8rmg79fyqlcdws9kxeaq5pkjwcysaep8du Yes, just wishful thinking on my part that there could be some "good enough" represses for the cheapskates like me. And high school and college kids who don't have the $$ but still want to listen on vinyl. I'm probably delusional in thinking that maybe some kid takes a chance on an album and opens a whole new world and we get another jazz fan. I know these companies are targeting a different audience. But same, I want them to have incentive to keep going!

nostr:npub12fj74u0xcjarft8rmf82weu0ays4utlytjjvtyrc55gg6a6vlp7semgka7 Me too! They aren't that hard to find in the bins, though...fortunately! So anyone who wants to take a chance on something new/different might be able to do so for a couple of bucks.

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle

Another in a series of "what the heck happened to my original copy?" (re)purchases.

Back when he started, Numan was an interesting mix of Bowie and Kraftwerk, and this was the very best example of that approach. It's super strong from beginning to end, peaking on side 2 with Cars, his most well-known song.

He re-invented himself over and over after Telekon, the next album, but IMO would never hit these heights again.

Yard Act - Dark Days (EP)

Ian Dury (and the recent song I posted) made me think to pull out this EP. The witty-yet-pointed lyrics feel like they're coming from a similar place...
