Joe Walsh - The Confessor

Still washing the taste of The Long Run out of my mouth. But we're well into Joe Walsh's "not enough good material for an album" period. Which isn't to say there aren't some good songs (eg The Confessor is great), but there's a lot of filler (eg 15 Years, I Broke My Leg) which disappoints, especially in comparison.

Tons of studio musicians on this (Marotta/Porcaro/Keltner), so the extensive use drum machines is surprising.

Gaadge - Somewhere Down Below

Pittsburgh-based (along with feeble little horse) Indie semi-shoegaze band...but not really. Their melodic sense, and perhaps their laid-back vocal style, sometimes reminds me of a band they sound nothing like - the Lemonheads.

They're confident players across a bunch of styles...they've supposedly been around for 10 years, but this is the first time in a real studio.

And they're good! Happy to have found them.

Robin Lane - Heart Connection EP

1981's Robin Lane and the Chartbusters was one of those hidden gems that felt like it was going to break out...and didn't. When Things Go Wrong charted, briefly, and was the 11th video to be played on MTV:

This 1984 EP was the last thing they recorded before the 2001 reunion, distributed locally. Found it recently in a used bin, which is nice, since I'd never heard it.

Joe Walsh - There Goes the Neighborhood

You listen to "...But Seriously, Folks" and this album, which bracket The Long Run, and you can't help but think: maybe the Eagles should have let Walsh put more songs on Eagles albums, instead of just two (Life in the Fast Lane and In the City).

I know a lot of Walsh stuff since "...But Seriously Folks" has been kindaof goofy and as such probably not Eagle-y. But at least it's fun to listen to. Mostly.

Glad you're enjoying the posts!

A Girl Called Eddy - A Girl Called Eddy

Not much to add to my previous notes, other than you should listen to it.

10cc - How dare you!

The very definition of humorous and quirky art-pop.

(This was the last album released by the original lineup; Godley & Creme went on to release some solo records, but are mostly remembered for their music videos, including the famous/funny/innovative Herbie Hancock "Rockit" - https://youtu.be/GHhD4PD75zY?si=rLFdpDi65s-UUAya .)

Eagles - The Long Run

Two bands, two monster albums - Hotel California and Rumors. Each took 3 years to follow-up, at great expense.

One result - this uninspired collection of not great songs (with a few good ones in there, including Walsh's In The City - from The Warriors) that are, well, dull. The other - the brilliant Tusk.

I know which one I'd rather listen to. And yet, here I am listening to this, and I can't tell you why.

Cocteau Twins - Tiny Dynamite & Echoes in a Shallow Bay

There were few bands I collected EPs of, but Cocteau Twins were one. Always worthwhile, these were an interesting midpoint between the more intense early material and the more melodic to come.

Sonny Rollins - On Impulse!

It's easy enough to read about this album, since it's quite well known, and very enjoyable.

But this mastering & pressing - which is part of the Acoustic Sounds Impulse series - is really fantastic, and the recording itself reflects a lot of the advances that had been made since the 50s, and of course it's Rudy van Gelder, because who else.
