Covid, since Wednesday. Fought my way through work yesterday but poleaxed today. Worst bout yet. Happy Easter from the plaguelands
Mickey 17 - is it a black comedy? Is it a meditation on the soul? Is it a vegan manifesto, or a paean to the value of alien woodlice? Or is it Mark Ruffalo going full Nic Cage?
Or is it just not very good?
Some of you may recall tiny kitten Ptolemy. This, at the age of one and a third, is Ptolemy now. He is a very different shape to poor old Ozy. And don't be fooled - that's all muscle. #proofofcat https://cdn.nostrcheck.me/2dd9eccf23bdd2405dbbd55317d20be380bb78d0ad316f559790b47b8defdc56/77891305fa5eed3b2bde937c1e8889d9f63f981def9695cfa7dd58643d93e375.webp
Alex Proyas is responsible for three of my favourite films: this, Dark City, and Gods of Egypt (against which I will not hear a word spoken, because casting Gerard Butler as Set is as bold as it is visionary).
I am rewatching The Crow (1994) before daring the new version and I am overwhelmed with memories, nostalgia and a sense of how mad the nineties really were. None of that bodes well for the new version.
What if epic auteur film, but in the style of BBC Play for Today and freeform jazz?
This is... awful. It may be so bad, it's not even so bad it's good.
I can't resist. I know I shouldn't. But tonight, tonight...
...we watch Megàlopolis.
The first five minutes suggest this will be a wild ride.
Just watched Paddington in Peru. Ever so slightly disappointed the final act didn't segue into Midsommar.
I am unutterably glad that they took the time to talk me through my own dumb phase, so I didn't end up cruel and stupid. I wish more people had friends like Sandpiper, and today, I'd like to say I see them. (4/4)
Sandpiper is one of the finest people I know, and unique, and most importantly, comfortable in their own skin which is a gift many would give their eye teeth for. To hate them seems such an incomprehensibly stupid, cruel, spiteful thing to do. (3/-)
When I was young, stupid and fumbling with my own identity, Sandpiper took the time during their own transition to lead me gently through my logical fallacies, dumbass thinking and biases without judgement. To remind me to see a fellow geek with mad passions and enthusiasms for the weird. (2/-)
Today is Trans Day of Visibility and I want to talk about someone I am not going to name because they are quite private. But it's someone I have known for thirty years, someone who was one of the first trans people I ever knew. Let's call them Sandpiper. (1/-)
Well, that is me having watched Chernobyl. Tony is so angry he is shouting at the telly. I just feel a bit nauseous, but I am more cynical. As a species, we don't really deserve much sympathy.
A powerful, necessary watch. Won't do it again tho.
Been saving Chernobyl until I was in the right frame of mind. I will never be in the right frame of mind. We are watching it tonight.
Just watched The Gorge. Delighted to see St Tudno's cemetery on the Great Orme doubling as Lithuania, Angel Bay doubling as France and Resident Evil 4 doubling at the plot.
Fell upon Severance like a starving man with a box of chocolate liqueurs. Watched Cold Harbour last night. Need to take a little while to digest it all. Still, bloody hell.
Just watched Conclave. 80-90% of a great film; somewhat deflated by what felt like an ending both unearned and deus ex machina.
That said, it gave me serious freeform vibes. I could see some of that happening in Ilam Hall...
But what, With all due respect, in the name of fuck is going on here?
Duo, u ok? Not sure I am.
It was bad enough when the Duolingo owl started passing itself off as some kind of chimeric rainbow owlicorn... https://cdn.nostrcheck.me/2dd9eccf23bdd2405dbbd55317d20be380bb78d0ad316f559790b47b8defdc56/61f2efbbc30abba5a0f31228514153d93feda668af6e13284aa74b45248fe0c0.webp
Late to the table again, I know, but we have just started watching Severance. Instantly hooked of course. It is giving me such a strong Legion vibe, as well as the obvious Prisoner modern feel. 4 episodes in.
