Yeah, you ain’t wrong. Honestly I think, and this is from having spent many years working as a local gov employee or as a contractor with local gov, the budget system. I mean the gov trying to be involved in all the shit they are is really the main problem, but if they’d run each dept on a sink or swim basis and let them basically provide whatever service they’re providing and if it doesn’t turn enough revenue it gets closed down you’d see a lot less of this. But in the current system, what happens is at the end of the year everybody finds random shit to upgrade or spend money on so they use up all of their budget and can argue for more on the next round. If they don’t use it, their budget gets reduced. It’s really a system that encourages massive amounts of waste, because even a good dept head in a libertarian or anarchist sense is stuck, because maybe he had a year where he didn’t have to spend much of his budget but he knows next year likely won’t be the same, and instead of being able to maintain his budget the people above him would take it from him, and then lay the blame on him the next year when he was operating on a deficit.

One of the first work orders we did for this county was clearing out the old computers from the IT dept. we hauled two of those dump trailers full of old desktops, laptops, toughbooks and toughpads. It was wild. All to the recycling center. Not sure what else could be done with them but it just blew my mind how much tech was going to the scrap pile.

It basically could. We had one other lord we hauled back before I was aware of nostr. I’d guess somewhere around 600 monitors give or take a hundred

Well, finally finished with the closet of forgotten tech. Don’t ask me how many monitors are in that pile…

A short story:

So I've been trying to get a lot of renovations and work done on the house and trying to finish the basement. I've recently gotten an estimate for putting a fence around the yard for the dogs.

It was a little more than I hoped but I had intended to just move forward, but they wanted a significant deposit immediately to get started. This immediately ran me into the headache of going from Bitcoin to USD in a quick and inexpensive manner.

This was also while ACH transfers that I've done to move the dollars to Fold (no way I'm spending thousands and not getting sats back on it), are suddenly taking 3x as long. A problem that started when SVB blew up.

After realizing that this was going to take a 2% fee on CashApp to sell, an ACH to my bank, then another ACH to my Fold, I decided to give a pitch for them to save me all those steps and just accept Bitcoin directly with the 1% fee using OpenNode.

The guy I was working with was interested and on board with my argument, but the owner refused despite the fact that it would obviously save them money and mean I could pay the deposit in 10 minutes time with no selling fee at all.

At this point I decided I was going to do something, especially with these sorts of jobs that involve large transfers which are a huge pain in dollars. I was just going to take the time to find someone who would accept Bitcoin.

I politely declined to do business with them. My response:

"Thanks man, appreciate the reply. I'm gonna look for other contractors here for a bit because I'd rather not build a relationship with a company that makes me have to revert to using a banking system that I literally could not despise more, or trust any less."

"I may get back in touch with you in a few weeks if there seems no other good option. No hard feelings, I do appreciate you taking this to the owner."

I added some choice words about the banking system for flair. šŸ˜†

The worker I was chatting with immediately agreed and then we started a short back and forth about how corrupt the banks were, why Bitcoin (of course he said crypto, lol) was the future, and HE brought up how the Fed was going to push a CBDC.

"Same. The more we use Bitcoin, the more irrelevant their attempt to centralize it is.

If the day comes that they push a CBDC on us, I'll officially be refusing to do business with anyone who doesn't accept Bitcoin, because I'm not touching that crap."

He responded with "Agreed!"

... that's where we left it.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got a text message tonight from the guy. He said the owner is willing to work with #Bitcoin if I hadn't found someone else yet.

I think it's time that I will start pitching the case for Bitcoin, in short and sweet bullet points, with every company I work with — & where it feels like it makes sense, I'm going to refuse to do business with anyone who doesn't accept Bitcoin.

We have weight in the market. We need to be the intransigent minority. Bitcoin won't save the economy if no one knows how to use it, or is too afraid and too panicked to try something new when the shit hits the fan. The time to push for integration is now.

Badass!

Ain’t it all? Junk is just stuff you get rid of 2 weeks before you need it.

Absolutely not…unless it’s some good shit….

And I have an ongoing purge. If I come across something I had forgotten and it has been a while since I forgot, it either goes to scrap or trash. Scrap gets run whenever I have a trailer full lol

Look now, don’t tease me, I’m liable to come across one and be like ā€œhell yeah my dude was looking for one of these!!ā€ This job does not help my innate hoarder self at all. I’ve brought home like a dozen toughbooks, like 6 tiny format PCs…have I done anything with any of them other than put ubuntu on it and then set them aside? Nope…one of these days I am gonna order an SSD and put one of them tinys to work as a BTC node but that day ain’t come yet lol

But what if stacking monitors is how I stack sats?

ā€˜Nother day, ā€˜nother couple hundred monitors….

I do tend to bury any veggie or fruit scraps, if only to try and mitigate the flies. Flies don’t really hurt anything, they’re just annoying and maggots fall through my drain screen into my worm juice bucket and make that bucket STANK. Not that work juice is very pleasing anyway lol

We were moving them all to the County’s IT dept, they’re apparently trying to reuse them for employees working remotely.

You should be good. I run my worm bins on 99% shredded cardboard/paper. I throw in whatever cuttings from our plants we have and whatever vegetable kitchen scraps I can. Started my bin last summer, had more worms than I knew what to do with when the temps warmed back up for this spring.

Hey! Lettie!! Glad to hear your youngins are doing good! I’m Matt McKinney, I was in the fireside freedom telegram. Believe it or not we’ve actually got a second on the way already, she’s due September of this year…definitely did not plan that lol

Oh it won’t, just means I might actually have a challenge. I been plotting on them boys for ages lol that and all my friends are just as trollish as I am, it’s gonna be great lol

While I’m glad you’re happy to have gotten the sharpie removed, I’m now somewhat disappointed that I’m not gonna get to name chickens by their bin labels lol
