Weird comparison 😆

Went out of town for a night to stay at a friend’s countryhouse 90 minutes away. Wife packs the cooler with some ice from the freezer to chill the wines she’s bringing for lunch on the drive.

Next day (Sunday) we drive back, wife asks what we’re doing for dinner. I suggest we defrost the burgers in the freezer. I drop wife and daughter off at the front door, find parking. Arrive home 5 minutes later, see she’s already got the burgers defrosting on the kitchen counter.

Then I look more closely, and these things are not only defrosting, but blood from the meat has dripped onto the wooden cutting board. (Why is she placing it right on the board without a plate?)

So I get a plate, put the meat on it, then think, wait, how has the meat already started dripping onto the board when she just got home five minutes ago and took it out?

I touch the meat, it’s soft, not frozen at all.

I burst into the bedroom, she’s in the shower. I yell, “WTF, you left the meat out on the counter all night when you went to get the ice out!”

Our freezer is packed, so she must have had to remove the burgers to get the ice out, and forgot to put it back before heading out the door.

I’m like, fuck! Now we have to throw out a kilo worth of grass-fed burgers, and I absolutely *hate* wasting food, especially food for which an animal died. (I love meat, deem it a health food, but I still respect where it comes from.)

So I start thinking. The burgers were frozen solid and up against one another. Probably took a good six-hours to defrost fully. And then they were probably refrigerator temperature for two more hours. So it’s only been 24 hours, and 16 at room temperature. And you see meat in at the butcher in glass cases sitting there all day.

She asks me to google it, and I say no point because you’ll just get a bunch of over-cautious pussified people saying once it’s out two hours, you throw it out. In Europe people are always leaving meat out much longer, though usually after it’s cooked.

So we smelled it (fine), salted it, put it in the fridge and resolved to cook them well done, i.e.,we chose to fuck around and find out.

That was last night. Knock on wood, hope I’m not jinxing it, but so far, so good.

Which isn't necessarily a bad deal, but let's call a spade a spade.

New Nostr who dis?

For real though, Amethyst looks awesome, but it's a bit overwhelming... I followed a bunch of people and some of their followers so far.

How do I find conversations or microcommunities built around specific interests, niches, etc.? Can I use relays, or hashtags, for this?

I like music (nearly all kinds), hiking, skiing, reading, bitcoin, martial arts, good movies and tv, yoga and meditation, craft beer and fine wine, economics, traveling, and art (especially traditional Japanese and Mongolian painting/calligraphy). And probably some other stuff, but this should do the trick for now.

nostr is still mainly used alongside twitter. in the best rare case, as a replacement. and only because people are running away from something about twitter they don't like.

there is nothing that people want to run to nostr for yet. zaps were promising, but bitcoin is still a hurdle (one that primal is doing the best at overcoming), and it's doubtful lightning could scale to a massive adoption moment.

nostr needs a feature or experience that's unique and sets it apart. i *think* that is the ecosystem of microapps over the long term...but it's definitely not in the short term. and that might be ok.

for twitter the initial draw was the simplicity and weirdness of 140 characters (we started with zero network effect, facebook had it all...that's built over time). later it became the conversation which lead to the "public square" (owned by a private corporation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). and then as it grew, it had a single point of control/failure people could attack.

nostr doesn't have to worry about that last bit. it's an incredible feature. but not one the average person cares about (no matter how much they yell "FREE SPEECH!"...if people actually cared about free speech, bitcoin and nostr would be all they used...they don't).

all this to say, we're not doomed. but what we think is the killer feature isn't right now. who's going to discover the one that is?

Zaps are the near-term killer feature. Openness is the long-term killer feature.

Let’s not talk about zaps in the past tense. They are absolutely the killer feature that makes everyone’s eyes light up. We need to double down on that. Lightning can scale globally through a combination of custodians and self-custody, which is fine. We are totally in the process of winning here, let’s lean into it.

Creating a better public square, powered by zaps, is the correct opening move. An ecosystem of apps built on the same open network will seal the deal. Nostr will replace the legacy web. Agreed, censorship resistance is important, but it alone won’t bring in the masses. But using the same identity and social connections in an ecosystem of beautifully executed apps that work well together? Everyone will dig that. That’s Nostr’s checkmate move.

IMHO we have a lot of work to do, but everything is moving in the right direction.
