Are we even allowed to use the internet in 2024 without Cloudflare? Dare to dream.
Are Bob and Alice acting out cryptography in Shakespearean prose? Five stars.
Definitely!! What about a crystal radio? Or is that lame? I am shaming myself but I've never built one.
Over at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Wizards (Soldersmoke Podcast) there is a regenerative receiver kit project from a few years back the hosts have talked about sometimes that I think would be a fun build. Kind of complicated though maybe.
Still, I recognize it is not called the bitpunk[ . ]am podcast so perhaps frequency modulation radio kits are the one true path. I'm down either way. If you want to research and plan a build would be happy to help. Not sure if you already have something in mind.
True true but also unstable branch (yolo) keeps it spicy.
Oh wow this looks really fancy. Thanks for this, it's going to be fancy firmware only from now on...
HAHA YES IT (BASICALLY) IS. It's the LilyGo T Deck. They have a pro or plus version which is in a prebuilt case.
Almost as good as going down the vintage cellphone rabbit hole and running your own sdr 3g or 2g base station.....almost
Yeah so true 100% agreed. I feel like I've been living in the dark ages for so many years until tonight.
Yeah fair enough, I was just sort of excited to be able to reuse the wiring harness and plug it in but I still have to attempt to smash this spaghetti into a case that my friend with a 3d printer designed so we may have to lose the connector if it gets tight. What a time to be alive!
Honestly the blackberry form factor is the most hilarious and fun part about it! The rollerball totally works too.
Andddd alive!

And now a 900MHz antenna...

(S'up nerds!)
Last time I attempted to remove this connector from the board with a soldering iron and solder wick I ripped the pads off which was pretty depressing...
This time, I used a hot air tool with liquid gel flux in a syringe and it seriously made desoldering this connector a breeze. Cleaned up very nicely with isopropyl alcohol and then removed old solder, cleaned up, new flux and new solder, and then I soldered on a wire harness for this GPS board stolen from the homebrew FPV industry. Cut the I2C as I'm using UART to the LilyGo T-Deck. Also put a little hot glue and magical NASA Kaptan (sp?) tape to keep the wires secure to the pads.

Rookie questions regarding #meshtastic: I'm thinking about getting a unit to mess around with, but feel a bit overwhelmed. I hear about Heltec as simple and inexpensive starter devices, (1) are these only for chat type of applications (that's what I seem to see in vids)? Today I listened to a podcast talking about LoRa and how it may be able to mesh web pages as well, at least some point. (2) Is LoRa the same thing as the Heltec devices? And (3) could you point me to a for-rookies resource or two that won't make my head spin?
I can dig around but thought asking for tried-and-true resources might save me some time.

Do you have a friend you could test with? Then you could get two, and try communicating with each other? I have been playing with a few nodes but they belong to a friend and we're sort of a little pricier (blackberry form factor lily go t deck). Maybe someone can recommend an affordable node to get started with
Oh yes truly you are correct, just saying it's nice to have a quick break from clown world here in the nostr happy place is all.
If I have Amethyst closed on my phone and I have integrated PoeKey, when a notification event happens, is my IP address or any information exchanged with any relays or otherwise, do I need to have internal/external tor/orbot on?
