So far my "nostr on Linux phones" experiment isn't going well. Yeah you can run android clients with Waydroid but if I wanted to do that I'd be using an Android phone.... But none of the Linux desktop ones will compile for me on PostMarketOS.
Guess that's an idea for a new project...

Cultures or subcultures?
I've noticed that for all we, and the people who chose the fediverse side of things, have strong opinions and a desire to get away from corporate walled gardens, there's a whole world of people out there who just don't care.
I've mentioned that the alternatives exist, but demand isn't quite there for the mainstream (yet)
Bottlepay in the UK is similar. You can't even withdraw to your own lightning node without proving you own it.
I wouldn't call companies "in the wrong" for being cautious and complying with regulations. But I prefer to stay away from that stuff and support P2P whenever possible.
That depends on whether the zap recipients are posting useful stuff or just begging.
If the expectation is that people will pay forward all their zaps then it becomes a zero sum game anyway and nobody profits.
People who share knowledge or offer entertainment value deserve to use their payments how they wish IMO.
The random zapfests are different. Begging in those then not zapping forward is against the spirit of them, I agree.
Docker's new policies are punishing open source projects. This is a good explanation.
Only thing I disagree with is the suggestion to move to GitHub. Not sure I'd trust them either given they banned some crypto projects last year.
It's time self-hosting came back into fashion.

Not crypto but self hosting.... Anyone use Emby? I run Plex. Keep trying to leave but Jellyfin isn't quite mature enough in my opinion. Too many stability issues and it seems to not get on with a lot of encoding formats. Curious if Emby is better (or there's something else I am overlooking)

Just had a Rust developer take my using the words "low level" to be an insult.
What are they teaching people these days π€―π¬
Yeah I prefer square. Rounded just feels like wasted space.

I think it's better that way. Trying to orange pill people who aren't interested is what makes people view crypto people in the same light as vegan CrossFit enthusiasts.
I'm far from a maxi, but for someone who doesn't really count themselves as a counter I'm active in the space (privacy is more my thing really).
I don't go around trying to educate people unless they ask. And oddly... When people want help with running a node, choosing a wallet or whatever, they seek me out.
Anyone here use Rocky Linux? I used to be a huge CentOS fan. I'm on Ubuntu Server these days and finally snapped (pun half-intended). Kinda don't mind having to build everything yourself (usually do that anyway), but I do want a reliable and stable ecosystem.

I'm a fan of the Fediverse. I think it serves a different role to Nostr and it's still valid.
Facebook working on activitypub is worrying. Embrace, extend, extinguish has been the model of the big tech companies since the 90s.
Everyone I know outside of f(l)oss and coiner circles can't get their heads around Mastodon OR Nostr, and both platforms have a long way to go before they're user friendly to people who don't actively want to avoid "the algorithm".
I'm not sure what the answer is. On the one hand, people getting off Facebook and onto an Activitypub platform is a step forward. On the other, it's a bit of a Trojan horse. I don't want to be on any instance that connects to them...
I'm curious what other instance admins / users plan on doing...

I normally use Snort in my browser. But it's dying from the hellthread so thought I'd swap for the day.
Hmm.. nostrgram.co can't decode my DMs?
Ok... This is kinda entertaining.
