I'm almost done reading _Grafity's Wall_, by Ram V., the author of _The Many Deaths of Laila Starr_ and _Rare Flavours_. It's the story of a young graffiti artist in Mumbai and his two best friends, a rapper/drug runner and an aspiring author who writes letters and hands them to strangers on the street. It's a beautiful, moving book.
I've gotten to a point near the end where I think something tragic is about to happen, so I'm setting it aside for a little. I just can't take that now.

When I was a little girl, we would find some species or other of chestnut like this in the little woods on our school grounds at recess and make them our "pets." I remember elaborate stories we invented about the transformations that would occur when their spiky layers started to dry and peel open.

Im my case, we had a regrettable tendency to weaponise plant matter. I remember folding sand inside catalpa leaves to make "hand grenades" that could be thrown against a tree trunk, where they'd explode in a cloud of dust.
