Someone on a social media platform recently said Tokyo Aleworks Taproom Itabashi had good buffalo wings and I was skeptical but I live close enough to give it a try, and I did Friday, and I gotta say the wings are damn good. The beer is also damn good. And those little jalapeño balls are also tasty when you dip them into the buffalo sauce and blue cheese. It was legit! I will go back again. There is also outdoor seating if you get lucky.

Tasty nigiri set we had at Kanehachi Sushi (かね八寿し) in Onjuku. I waited too long to try this place, which has always been right on my way between the pub and the beach house. Fresh, fresh, fresh!!!

Inspired by Safari in Akasaka, who makes the best doro wat, I cooked up my own batch last week after hunting for spices. It was my third attempt and getting better each time. This is one of my absolute favorites as it’s got a wonderfully unique and spicy thing going. I used The Daring Gourmet recipe for the doro wat and the berbere. I didn’t go so far as to make the niter kibbeh, so just butter for that. If you try this one at home, go three large onions instead of three cups, and reduce 1/2 tsp salt.

Cycad Brewing near Kanamecho/Ikebukuro served up an excellent BBQ lunch today, and the beer is top quality as well. Brisket and beef habanero cheddar sausage!

Wow wow! I just had a great ramen at Mukyoku near Kanamecho. Spicy negi chashu ramen. The negi was piled high as well as a good amount of menma. The chashu was spectacular. It was thick, tender, and the fat was melty, rendered perfectly. I’ll be going back for sure.

Ok so my number 5 stop is Hub, but don’t blame me. I’ve got gold, so it’s a good discount, and the pour, for a Laphroaig 10, can’t be beat. Also it’s my first time at this hub so it counts.

Third stop was a bust. Shot Bar Asha looked nice, but table charge of ¥1000 for appetizers wasn’t in my hashigo vibe. Maybe another time.

Instead I’ve come to Ale House. B1 pub, apparently with live music Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 pm. Caol Ila double to start. The staff are really nice here. I want to try the jerk chicken but he said 40 minutes in the oven. I don’t have 40 minutes tonight but I’ll be back.

Most importantly… right when I was about to leave, he recommended the Classic of Islay whiskey, an unnamed from Lagavulin. Winning!

Ok. Second stop. Aloha Whiskey Bar. One of the best whiskeys I’ve experienced in a long time. It’s a 30 year undisclosed Lapharoig apparently. It was insanely beautiful, fruity, and light footed for Laphroaig, but still had that character I love. Also had an old classic 10yr, wonderful and less punchy than usual.

A little something for my namesake… It’s 梯子 (hashigo) night, or bar hopping night as I explore Ikebukuro. My first stop was Bar Ace. Nice guy at the bar and good whiskey recommendations for me. I started with a wine barrel whiskey distilled at Caol Ila. It was excellent, as are all things from Caol Ila. Also had a 10 year Lagavulin directly from a mini cask. Both great. Good atmosphere. Where shall I go next?

April 2nd I hit up Hakata Ramen Fukuya on the west side of Ikebukuro. I randomly stopped into this place while looking for some place called Gyumon that was apparently closed… maybe forever. Not sure. It was unclear. Anyway, it was good, but I probably should have tried the non-spicy version first to really get a feel for the broth. I’ll do that next time.
