Was thinking about "logic" in biology while reading Nick Lane's book "Power, Sex, Suicide" (ignore the catchy title; it's a great book). Not every logic applied by someone who studies nature is automatically bio-logic. In summary and retrospect, I would say that most of the logic I have used in my years in biology was math, physics, or engineering logic. Very little was truly bio-logic. Nick Lane, by contrast, argues very logically that bacterial design prevented them from growing and evolving the complexity of the higher organisms that surround us today. What I am trying to say is this: determine and address the root question (challenge) in what you do as early and as rigorously as possible.
I have been driving a Tesla Model 3 for 5 years (bought it right after Tesla announced it had added Bitcoin to its balance sheet). A great car, very reliable. But I wonder why Tesla would constantly nag you about driving a little bit too fast, breaking a little too late (like having grandma on the passenger seat), or watching something else for 5 seconds when you are alone on the road, _and_ refusing to re-activate the USD 7k full-self-driving package after ignoring their nanny advice for a few times (happened to a friend). All this while Elon is spearheading sovereignty and free speech. Drove a Taycan the other day just to see that all the nanny functions can easily be switched off using the standard user interface.

In the late 80ies and early 90ties I spent all my time on molecular and cellular biology which earned me a PhD in the natural sciences. This is not a bragging exercise but the preamble to a book recommendation. Granted I studied three decades ago, it is nevertheless amazing how much more clarity and insights I get from Nick Lane‘s books. Had he been my professor then I might never have gone down the software engineering path, might have missed Bitcoin altogether 😬. I find it both fascinating and surprising how much of the publishing world (including posts and podcasts) is increasingly synchronized daily, with ideas starting with a thought leader on one end of the world and ending with a poll among the people on the other within 24 hours. I admire people who take the time to breed their own ideas to fruition. And I need to remind myself to be more critical of what I read, even if it sounds compelling at first: do I really want to read, digest, and adopt it? Or do I let it pass?

Freedom is everything. Few people can survive without it and stay positive and constructive; you seem to be one of those few. At one point it will unsensical to denominate in a dying currency. I wonder what will become the measuring stick for Bitcoin when Bitcoin will be the measuring stick for everything else.

Whenever I explore a new tool—whether it’s a stove, a task planner, or a language model—I remind myself of the deeper purpose: to make meaningful use of the limited time I have. If a tool promises efficiency but ends up consuming more than it gives, I step away. Life is too short to optimize for the tool’s sake. These things exist to serve us, not the other way around. Our time is finite, and we should spend it walking our path.
