nostr:npub163cardyfsdt6rj3supxpvdnjjsx78kgxvdkvr8cczjp5f70jywwqjev6q8 In theory, new nuclear plants might seem to be a solution, however, a) there's still no permanent solution for nucler waste, and b) I'm very skeptical of companies telling the truth if it affects their profit margin -- especially if they have government contracts. Fun fact: Did you know that Holtec gets to keep money it doesn't spend? Sounds like an incentive to cut corners, wouldn't you say?

Heh. I must be doing something right on #Mastodon. The #Corporate #Trolls are coming out of the woodwork!

Hmmmm... So, like when a country is selected to host #OlympicGames, they seem to come up with TONS OF MONEY to pay for Olympic #Infrastructure, and yet there's NO MONEY when #ClimateChange could be mitigated by IMMEDIATELY FUNDING 100% #Tidal, #SolarPower, #WindPower, etc., with the technology and resources we have on hand?!!! SOUNDS LIKE CAPITALIST BULLSHIT TO ME!

#Holtec under ‘criminal investigation,’ EDA says in since-redacted court filing

By Matt Friedman and Katherine Landergan, June 24, 2020

"Holtec International, which received one of the biggest #TaxCredits in #NewJersey history, is under criminal investigation, according to a legal brief filed Monday by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

"The brief was in response to a lawsuit Holtec — an #energy technology company — filed against the EDA in March for holding up a $26 million payment on its $260 million tax incentive to build a facility in Camden. The delay was because of an allegedly false answer Holtec gave on its 2014 tax credit application.

“Holtec’s #misrepresentations — which include its failure to disclose a prior government debarment by the Tennessee Valley Authority (the ‘#VA’) for bribing an official of that agency — first came to light during an investigation conducted by the Governor’s Task Force on the Economic Development Authority’s Tax Incentive Program, and they are now the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation,” reads the June 22 brief by attorney Ricardo Solano."

#Palisades #nuclear plant gets $150 million in #Michigan budget

By Sheri McWhirter, Jul. 03, 2023

"Michigan lawmakers included $150 million toward the effort to restart the Palisades nuclear plant as part of a record $81.7 billion state budget passed last week.

"State officials contributed the millions in taxpayer dollars toward #Holtec International’s effort to get the nuclear plant upgraded and fired back up to provide 800 megawatts of carbon-free, base load power as the energy sector transitions away from fossil fuels. If it happens, it would be the first nuclear plant nationwide to return to generating power after being decommissioned.

"The plant was closed last year when its fuel ran out and the owner sold the facility to Holtec. The new owner has now twice applied for federal money to help get the plant operational again.

"The Biden administration has a $6 billion fund within the U.S. Department of Energy intended to preserve the U.S. nuclear reactor fleet and energy sector jobs.

"[...] Power generation at nuclear plants does not generate greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, like burning fossil fuels does. However, some #environmental advocates remain concerned about ecological #degradation from needed #uranium #mining and #radiation risk from #ToxicWaste nuclear plants produce."

Leaks found in hose to transfer #Fukushima #nuclear-contaminated #wastewater

Editor: huaxia, 2023-08-11

"The operator of the crippled #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant has found leaks in a hose used to transfer nuclear-contaminated wastewater, local media reported on Friday.

"Tokyo Electric Power Company (#TEPCO) conducted a probe after higher-than-usual levels of #radioactive material were detected in #rainwater in the dike around a storage tank, public broadcaster NHK reported.

"An inspection found that some water had leaked from cracks of about four centimeters on a hose being used for transferring radioactive wastewater at the time, the report said.

"As the hose was used to transfer radioactive wastewater from another tank, TEPCO analyzed water in the dike around the tank and detected up to 67,000 becquerels of tritium per liter, which exceeded 60,000 becquerels, the standard set by the Japanese government for releasing tritium into the environment.

"TEPCO said that someone caused the cracks with a cutter blade while removing the packaging around the hose after it was delivered, adding that the water that leaked remained inside the barrier.

"TEPCO added that the leak would not affect the plan to discharge the radioactive wastewater from the plant into the ocean.

"Despite strong opposition from neighboring and #PacificIsland countries, as well as local fishermen over the irreversible impacts on the marine environment and public health, the Japanese government and TEPCO have been pushing for release of the radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant hit by a massive earthquake and an ensuing tsunami in March 2011."

#Maine leaders say they won’t tolerate #NeoNazi paramilitary camp in Springfield

by Kathleen Phalen Tomaselli August 9, 2023

"After reading a Bangor Daily News article about former U.S. Marine Christopher Pohlhaus building a neo-Nazi encampment in Penobscot County, Sen. Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor, wrote Tuesday on social media it is 'time for the Governor, the Attorney General of Maine, the Penobscot County District Attorney, and the U.S. Attorney to work on shutting these #Nazis down and sending this guy back to #Texas.'

"Since last year, #Pohlhaus has been inviting white male followers to move to Maine and especially to his 10.6-acre property in Springfield to help him clear land for cabins and train for what he calls a violent war. Pohlhaus’ Springfield project is an example of organized #extremism taking root in Maine."

nostr:npub1np9hgxkjdz99y2dhd36hcjkxfg362cl92f5f09f5vsk3qjwmeedsrd5aku Um, the Bay of Fundy has huge tides, right? Perfect place for #TidalEnergy generation. Not a good place to build a #nuclear plant!

So, some of you may be wondering where my handle comes from. "Doomsday" is my nickname from high school -- because I was aware even in the early 1980s that humans were trashing the planet, and would pay the price if they didn't stop (and nuclear weapons are the ultimate in pollution, and yes, nuclear plants and weapons go hand-in-hand). As for the "CW"? It didn't stand for "Content Warning" (though that's approrpriate). The "CW" stood for "Conspiracy Watch," and my original FB page was originally about calling out some of the more ridiculous conspiracy theories floating around at the time (2010). And then #Fukushima meltdown happened, and I realized that those who were whistleblowers, were being censored and branded as conspiracy theorist. That's when my investigative journalist antennae started buzzing, and what was meant to be satire was turning into reality. I mean, I was aware that big corporations did bad things to cover up stuff (Silkwood), but the Fukushima coverup went all the way to the top (Obama and Hillary Clinton knew how bad things were, but only told their close friends. And yes, I FOIA'ed the emails, and have copies). I also discovered that #TEPCO was rejecting potential technologies to deal with #FukushimaWater rather than dumping it in the ocean, but hey, they thought they were "too expensive" (at what cost a living ocean?). I moved DoomsdaysCW to the BirdSite in 2014, and came over to Mastodon in November 2022. I just wanted to let folks know where the moniker comes from -- and why I'm sometimes snarky with a dark sense of humor. And as for the topics I post about? I've been posting about them even before FB and birdsite, and started the first online 'zine back in 1994 with my friends (where I wrote about a lot of the same issues I write about now). And regarding the current state of the planet? I honestly can't believe we let things go this far -- and yet, I can believe it. The merger of corporations and government made sure everything was greenwashed and covered up, and now we're all paying the price.

#SolarHam is reporting that the flare came from region 3386.

Region 3386 is NOT directly Earth-facing -- moving to the far side. However, with the levels of recent #Solar activity, the #CME may affect Earth, even if it isn't a direct hit.

Either would be a massive improvement!

I think I prob prefer the two-round system on the whole.

I like the finality of it - "OK you voted for who you actually wanted in the first round. Now this is the actual choice - the fascist or the non-fascist"

nostr:npub1n43v5nuc5rjyey3tpppfe3r3hx74s60dhnxmy696ra7f8ey6q5wqnez324 Alas, I've been spending more time here on Mastodon. I may blog again at some point, but I have enough going on right now...

nostr:npub1mexq2eagqavq0hzychu7jr2yh7grgxcwasae3lle8ywtasw0mkpqujqtcz I've worked in small town libraries. The christofascists used to just take out occult books (or other objectionable material) and not return them (in effect, stealing them). Now they are being less "covert" and open about their censorship and fascism. I blame the orange hypocrite for giving them license to openly impose their hate on others who are different. Scapegoating is something fascists are very good at.

"The earth just lived through its hottest month on record—but if we didn’t have the power of the oceans on our side, things could have been even more catastrophic. Since the 1970s, the world’s #oceans have absorbed 93 percent of the excess #heat in the atmosphere generated by burning #FossilFuels and about one-third of the #CarbonDioxide emissions released into the atmosphere.

"Regina Rodrigues, a professor of physical oceanography and climate at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Florianópolis, Brazil, specializes in marine #heatwaves. Oceans, she told me, act as a buffer against the most #ExtremeHeat for those of us on land.

"'If the ocean wasn’t absorbing this excess heat, we would be in a much worse situation,' Rodrigues said. 'It’s great for us, but all of this comes at a price.' That price is a steady increase in sea surface temperatures: The world’s oceans have warmed by around 0.13 degrees Celsius (0.23 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade over the past 100 years."
