I wanted my feed to be full. I only unfollow people who haven’t been active for months. Everyone else I give a fair shake because nostr needs content 😁

No problem! This one kinda reminds me of a pigeon.

Bird of the day: Zebra Dove

The zebra dove (Geopelia striata), also known as the barred ground dove, or barred dove, is a species of bird of the dove family, Columbidae, native to Southeast Asia. They are small birds with a long tail, predominantly brownish-grey in colour with black-and-white barring. The species is known for its pleasant, soft, staccato cooing calls.

Hello 👋 #Nostr I’ve been posting about birds and Roman history since joining but I think I’m going to start posting something a little more personal to me. I’m a long distance runner and I really enjoy training to achieve the goals I set out for myself. Last year I ran the Chicago Marathon in sub 3 hours and qualified for Boston. Which I was pleased with because it was my first marathon. I’m currently at the beginning stages of training for the 2024 season. If you’re interested in running or would like to learn more about it feel free to follow along on my training journey or ask me any questions. I’m always game for helping newcomers to the sport.

Yesterday was my first day back at it since October because I like to hibernate during the winter months 😂

Daily Roman History:

Two fun Pompey Magnus tidbits. First, after returning from conquering almost the entire eastern Mediterranean coast the senate wanted to humble Pompey the Great by giving him a near impossible task: rid the Mediterranean Sea of pirates. All of them. Not one to shy from a challenge Pompei accomplished this goal. In three months.

Second, most marriages in Rome were for political gain or wealth transfer. Pompey's marriage to Julius Ceasars daughter, Julia, proved an oddity in that they seemed to actually enjoy each other company. This lead to ridicule of Pompey "Hey, get a load of Pompey, he actually LOVES his wife, lmao"

Daily Roman History:

Emperor Nero was a bit of a weird one. He thought he was an amazing actor/athlete/musician. He was not. After bribing officials to postpone the Olympic games a year so he could compete he participated in a 10 horse chariot race. Despite being thrown off at the beginning and leaving the race he was crowned victor. The officials based this on the fact he WOULD have won if he had, ya know, finished. After his death his name was removed from the list of winners.

Bird of the day: White-crested laughingthrush

The white-crested laughingthrush is a popular caged bird species, and it is likely that individuals which escaped or were voluntarily released during religious practices are the cause for the expansion of G. l. diardi's range to Malaysia and Singapore in the 1970s–1980s. The exotic bird trade has brought it to the UK and US as well, but no wild populations have been reported there.

Daily Roman Facts:

Emperor Valerian has the ignoble claim of being the first emperor captured alive by the enemies. Taken prisoner after losing the Battle of Edessa in 260AD against the Sassanid Empire lead by Shapur I, he would live the remainder of his life as a prisoner of the foreign power. His life during that time is one of two possibilities, either he lived a rather comfortable, if obscure, life as a high ranking prisoner, eventually dying of old age. Or he was routinely humiliated by the Sassanid court even being used as a stool for the King to enter and exit his litter. This telling has him being flayed alive and stuffed for display in the audience chamber of Shapur.
