I saw a kitten today. What's your good news?

This was the last time Ignatius posted his nails.

My nephew's knife is now mostly done as well. As I mentioned earlier, even an HC spike doesn't have enough carbon in it to make a good knife, but I went ahead and quenched and tempered (to straw) just to make the most out of what carbon it does have.

The tip and a few inches behind that are razor sharp and will shave hair, but the part of the blade closest to the handle isn't quite there yet, so I'll work on it some more tomorrow. I'm going to leave the oil finish on but I may draw file more of a polished surface on the business end of the blade for aesthetics.

I got some forging done today on my paid holiday off work to honor ol' Chris. My main project was to forge a knife for my nephew, whose birthday is coming up soon and I feel it is time for him to learn how to kill a man with a blade.

As a side project I also finished the forging on the feather hook I began a few weeks ago. Now all that is left is to file off the rough edges and then apply a finish.

I'm only somewhat satisfied with this hook. The hook itself is a little rough, so I'll need to do a lot of file work to get it looking acceptable. In the video I watched the smith cut some gaps into the vanes to make it look more realistic, but perhaps my hot chisels are too wide because I don't really think it looked that nice. His looked natural, mine just looked like nicks in the metal.

That being said it's perfectly functional and will be a welcome addition in the coop, where I need more hooks anyway.
