Why should you use hardware wallets for your precious Bitcoin, instead of software wallets, even if it's on an air-gapped PC?

A PC is a general-purpose tool. It has so much hardware and runs so much software, that it's impossible to check every single aspect how your Bitcoin could be stolen.

Even if you keep your PC air-gapped, you cannot do this for infinite time. There will be some time when you want to use your Bitcoin. And for this, you will need to either connect it with the Internet or at least transport some data from your Internet-connected PC to your air-gapped PC and vice versa. The same way (e.g. a thumb drive) can be used to transport malicious code, so that's not really an advantage to a USB-connected hardware wallet.

Also, the complexity of PCs is several magnitudes higher than the complexity of any hardware wallet. More complexity means more bugs. And one bug might be enough that your Bitcoin can be stolen.

The same logic applies to hardware wallets with shitcoin support --> More code for each shitcoin means more complexity and as such more potential bugs.

You should also prefer hardware-wallets with open source firmware and hardware to those with closed source. More people that can check the code means less potential for unnoticed bugs.
