Out of all of that, that’s what you choose to jump on? Not that he’s actively violating their rules and inflating his own self worth to make it sound like Apple is out to get him, but because their download count is wrong? 🤦🏻‍♂️

It could have a million downloads, the guy is still a douchebag and it looks like I’m not the only one who realized that, LMAO.

Did Will tell you all of this because it makes no damn sense and Damus isn’t that important. It’s one app, from a relatively unknown protocol and an unknown developer, with less than 700 downloads.

The stripped down version would be that Apple told him they would remove his app if he didn’t comply with the rules he agreed to when he brought his app to the store in the first place and he got pissy about it, plain and simple.

And instead of complying, he creates a hack to hide the functionality from them. He then doubles down by offering subscriptions outside of the store as well. Yeah, that sounds like him and it explains why Apple would continue to give him a hard time.

no doubt, but if it is kept on device, this whole conversation is moot. Personally, I would just ask the developer before I went through all of that, lol. And considering how many apps are currently available to access Nostr, it would be rather silly to expect it to work any other way.

The best workarounds are the ones you never need to use…

What message, that we only enforce our policies on popular apps? I’m sure you can see how silly that sounds.

As far as membership, I wasn’t aware you could purchase it on their website or without standard currency, that’s probably what pissed them off. Now it’s starting to make sense.

Damus is actively circumventing Apple’s policies in order to avoid paying their dues.

I’m still up in the air on how I feel about their 30% take. I agree that nothing is free, so if you’re advertising a free app in their store, they’ll have to get their cut some other way. At least they’re not charging them monthly “rent”, regardless of what they sell, that would really bury most developers rather quickly.

Now, they do offer a subscription, that would guarantee they get a cut, except not everyone subscribes. So, we’re back to square one, how does Apple guarantee it gets a cut? By taxing zaps.

I don’t necessarily agree with their tactics, but I can certainly understand them. At the end of the day, they are still just a business.

I also don’t think popularity had anything to do with it, that’s kind of petty. I can’t see a multi trillion dollar company going after a single developer because his app does well and they’re not getting a piece of the action.

I also can’t see Apple allowing these other apps to continue violating their policies simply because the apps aren’t that popular. So, there has to be something else we’re missing.

Someone’s defensive, hahaha.

Yes, it’s better than drinking soda all day, but, so is drinking plain water.🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m sure there are ways. This is what happens when you out the cart before the horse.

How do you access nostr:npub1v5ufyh4lkeslgxxcclg8f0hzazhaw7rsrhvfquxzm2fk64c72hps45n0v5 on your phone if you don't want to expose your nsec by pasting it into the app? #asknostr

wouldn’t that information be kept on your device?

If they would’ve taken their time when creating our identity strings, they could’ve created a random shuffle of your string. That way you’re not actually creating a random string, which would run out eventually, you’re just reusing yours in different ways. Seems like that would’ve been smarter than hacking away at it like this.

It’s also worth mentioning that this has been Apple’s MO since day one and people continued to buy their products.

If you don’t like how a company operates, then you should probably stop buying their products, LMAO. Other wise, nothing will ever change.

You can’t gatekeep something that is freely available on another operating system. The problem is, people want to have their cake and eat it too.

They want the benefits of iOS AND Android. And while there may be nothing inherently wrong with that idea, it’s not a very practical request.

There are features that make Android better in some respects and there are features that make iOS better in some respects.

If you want security and optimization, choose iOS.

If you want freedom of choice above all else, choose Android.

I find it absolutely disgusting that the EU would use legislature to tamp down another company’s success simply because none of their tech companies can match it.

I was trying to point out that there has to be another reason why Damus can’t natively zap since there are plenty of clients that operate like Damus but aren’t restricted.

Admittedly, I haven’t used it yet, but, YakiHonne seems to have the same functionality as Damus, without the need for a hack, So I can’t help but wonder what else they did that Apple treats them this way.

And where did he post it? On a platform that censors.🤦🏻‍♂️😂

I think you’re doing about as good as you can at this point.

I would wait until Nostr is more stable before trying to add anything on top of it. We have enough devs putting the cart before the horse already, lol.

It’s their business and they have been doing it a lot longer. So, yeah, I’ll trust them before some random developer. 🤣

The Damus guy said that’s the only way that Primal can uses zaps, as long as the App Store gets a piece. But that can’t be right, because there are plenty of clients that allow you to use NWC and they are not restricted like Damus.
