Ecash was built on top of the banking system too.
Tether is cypherpunk as fuck, but not Austrian.
It lets you transfer US dollars around the world with pretty good privacy, at a fraction of the cost of a wire transfer. Only the issuer and the redeemer must be known.
But it’s backed by fiat + treasury bonds, it’s inflationary by nature, and it doesn’t threaten the hegemony of the US dollar around the world. If anything, it extends the coverage and availability of the USD beyond the banking system.
Philosophically speaking, Tether is in line with the cypherpunk ethos of the early 1990s. Ecash supporters would have loved it.
But it’s the opposite of the aspirations of the Bitcoin project, as it was defined by Satoshi Nakamoto himself when he included “Chancellor on the brink of second bailout for banks” in the genesis block.

The reason why the Lightning network failed to get a lot of traction in the last 6 years is that it used sats instead of bits.

Centralized exchanges have been a necessary evil to increase bitcoin adoption.
But at this point, they've become a cancer. Most of them forgot about the mission with which they started and succumbed into the quicksand of regulations.
Non-KYC ATMS + P2P exchanges like Vexl, HodlHodl & Bisq are the future. They already have very good user experience, they only need more promotion.
What are some speculative use cases for Firefish?
Well, as project co-founder Igor points out, people who only have bitcoin can take a fiat loan and reinvest it: either buy more bitcoin on the cheap or else look for other opportunities in stocks, real estate & business.
Be sure you can afford to pay back the loan so you don’t lose your BTC stash, though!
