Imagine if there was a widely accepted civic duty to run your own email server.

You know culturally it used to be an oddity to be offended. So much so that it was a punchline/trope in many comedies. Consider Caddy Shack. Rodney Dangerfield spends the entire movie offending the sensibilities of snooty country club guests. The audience was on his side. We used to all know as a point of fact that being offended was weak, pathetic and childish. Nowadays many Americans are on the side of the hysterical/offended/triggered person. Shit is whack. What does FOSS stand for?

Yea, I don't like that it's not open source any more.

1. Coldcard was FOSS and bootstrapped - nvk and peter denied interested VC investors.

2. Foundation cloned code, announced slightly different hardware, raised money from those same VCs pre-product.

3. Coldcard changed software license to allow everything but that. No longer FOSS.

Coldcard source code is verifiable and reproducible. It can be modified and built but not sold. You can even add your own entropy during seed generation. I personally disagreed with their decision to change the license but it does not change the security of the product.

NVK is a friend. Coinkite is a sponsor of RHR. Ten31 is an investor in Coinkite. I have used and recommended their products before all of that but transparency is important.

I am personally grateful their team continues to build robust bitcoin hardware. My family relies on it.

Building non-FOSS source-available tools helps the builders get paid for their work, while still providing the transparency needed for verification, as well as providing the possibility of guerilla underground reproduction of the tools if the government shuts the project down. Most source-available tools are free to use for anything except resale. Not only coinkite but also Start9 and Umbrel are non-FOSS source-available. These are badass cypherpunk tools. Without the freedom to license themselves according to their needs, some of these projects may not even exist at all.
