Gold’s recent price appreciation has initiated a spike in gold transfers and traditional institutions like the Bank of England are having trouble managing the transportation demand. It has also lead to speculation about the amount of gold reserves that the bank actually has.

This situation highlights two of the problems with gold. Portability and verifiability. It takes time and energy to transfer gold across the ocean and it’s difficult to hold institutions accountable for their gold holdings.

You can send Bitcoin anywhere in the world in a couple minutes and it’s audited every 10 minutes.

Think about the amount of time and energy that is spent on our complicated tax system.

Thousands of IRS agents, working to extract more dollars from taxpayers and taxpayers having to spend countless hours completing their taxes.

That time and energy could probably be used to produce some cool things.

With the cutting of public services we will most likely see beneficial services replaced in the private sector.

I think smaller government is better, but what are some services that you think should remain public?

For example, I was thinking about education and how there are some problems with the public education system. For this reason, private education has become a popular avenue for many families. At the same time, I think all youth should have the opportunity to be educated. I don’t think removing public education is on the table, but I was just thinking about what education would look like if it was completely private and people could decide between many different private educators, based on their values and prices.

What are some services that the government should refrain from cutting?

Yea I feel the same. I feel for people losing their jobs, but the government should be smaller. The free market can decide whether the service is benefitting society and worth the expense.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is looking to shed a number of public programs which will most likely lead to a number of government jobs being eliminated.

I’m keeping my eye on the February (released on March 7th) and March (released on April 4th) employment numbers.

Over the past 12 months we’ve seen 437,000 government jobs added. These government job additions have been propping up the job numbers. The only other sector where more jobs have been added over the past year is “private education and health services”.

We could see the markets dip when we do get the job numbers for the next couple of months, as they won’t be propped up by government jobs.
