What I don't understand is why you chose to essentially hard-fork nostr. Why not build all this cool stuff on nostr? It would all work as far as I can tell.

depends on what they are doing and what paths are users giving them access to, but there is no enforcement of sandboxing like in say IOS or something.

Pubky core is like Nip01, it is like DNS and WebDav, and it is more or less what I just described.

Now you can build on top of such stack, I am sure you could come up with 100s of micro apps ideas. Others will too. Your data (the public parts) will be available to them and theirs to you. If you also want every developer to interop with others, get them in a room I guess. Pubky core is not any more responsible for that than the spec of Websocket is responsible for Nostr clients understanding each other.

There is no magic for interoperability, and I don't personally consider it my mission, I want censorship resistant DNS, and a data store with an open API. Higher level abstractions will churn like hell, but at least the data will be there for anyone motivated enough to reverse engineer it and squeeze some value from it.

Not even some things, the only thing we sign (yet) is just a very short lived authentication token, which you send it to your homeserver and get a good old cookie (session) in return, and you use that going forward.

In fact we also have a 3rd party authorization spec(and working code), so you can allow a web app to obtain that session without uploading the keys to that 3rd party app.

We will properly go even further and make your root key only used once in the beginning, then use a delegated key for logging in when you get signed out... but we haven't went that far yet.

For now, you use your key as often as you sign in to Gmail... very rarely

The very fact that we insist on identity sovereignty puts us at a disadvantage vs. say Bluesky where people pretend that they own their DID, but they don't.

So if we can't avoid the onboarding cost of managing a root key, at the very least we owe it to ourselves to minimise that UX cost to the least necessary.

More importantly using your pubky root key as nsec goes against our philosophy of keys longevity.

If you can of course put an npub in Pkarr packet as TXT record, but I don't think Nostr will integrate that.

True that. I was in the working group that made activity pub. We really pushed hard for them to follow standards on identity that would have made all of this SO much easier. Got 80% of the way there, I think. In retrospect, could have been better, but could have been a whole lot worse. A decent AP / Nostr integration could help, but of course, the way things are now, folks are tribal. Discovery can actually be quite good on AP as it theoretically inherits from Linked Data. Not sure on the algorithm front ... isnt it just pluggable?

I think the innovation is more around an architecture that assumes everyone has their own data store. They’re also using PKARR DHT for keys which is something that I think is simply too late for nostr to adopt
