Increasing the “friction” to post would arguably provide a better UX. Make people specifically choose where they want their “flyer” to go. Make them think about it. Show an animation or flow that indicates it “went there”.

This whole “feed group” thing has been tried many times before. Called “circles” etc. it ends up being way too complex and over-engineered. Users just don’t get it because there’s no real life corollary.

You can do whatever you want to share read/decrypt keys on the backend, but just make the UX what people already understand. Visibility settings, private accounts, newsletters, etc.

No need for users to run servers for that, all of this can be done client side as long as you have mail system to share keys through.

Yes you can't immediately get a permission to read or write if none of the moderators are available, but the scarcity here can't be solved by an always on server, given the fact that you want humans to moderate spaces not robots.

I don't think there is any evidence that any leadership could have done better, certainly I wouldn't, and no one here would have, not sure who do you have in mind who could have done a better job.

Massive lists are cheap to store and cheap to search through. And the somehow is a question of ownership, we know how to make collaborative lists managed by owners/moderators.

It is time to stop caring about global feeds and just make our small-worlds web better and more sovereign and be happy with that.

One of the downsides of Nostr that I’ve been thinking about is the amount of garbage content that must be filtered on the front end. People keep posting test content or fake content for testing or by mistake and it all shows up in the feeds. This makes it difficult to have a quality website that delivers long form for example. You pretty much can’t show “global” articles from relays and even from following you see a lot of garbage.

For anyone who cares, the reason I a argue for a sovereign e2ee filesystem, is because that is the only thing we can make interoperable between apps... just like POSIX and files in general are the only interoperability success story in history.

What I consider feasible is taking that and make it Web native without getting locked in platforms like Google Drive.

Once that is in place, let the best app developer win, and if one file format becomes very useful, we reverse engineer it like we always do, like interoperability always worked; forcefully.

New Zealand is both very similar to the US and really different. For one we have roughly double the percentage of immigrants in the country than the US. And in Wellington where I live it’s even higher than the national average. While we do have work temporary work visas they’re not nearly as tied to employers than the US system and workers have many more rights.

Another big difference is that for all jobs that are similar to what you’d get on an H1B visa it is a direct to permanent residency visa. Meaning those immigrants get full voting after being in the country for 2 years.

Lots of companies are using AI today, especially tech companies. As a high income country New Zealand has high labor costs, especially at the lower end, this is consistent with New Zealand having an economy more like a Northern European social democracy. At fast food restaurants you always order with a touch screen instead of telling your order to person. Someone still does the cooking and prep of your food. That’s tech that has replaced a human job, not the smartest AI, but it’s doing some to try and upsell me.

The New Zealand government has had a big push to shrink the public sector using AI, it’s not gone great, what has worked somewhat better is AI use amongst private contractors to the government. They do more with less money by augmenting work with AI.

There are laws in government for buy local, which has prevented some overseas outsourcing and helped create a domestic tech industry. But we also benefit a lot from other people’s outsourcing. The neighborhood where I live has a ton of studio lots and special effects companies doing work for Hollywood and the video game industry. They’re pausing new investments while they look at what AI will do to their industry. The work will still need to get done but there will be fewer junior 3D designers needed.

Anyway I think we’ll see this change as slowly slowly with lots of promise and then all of a sudden. Just like Waymo is rolling out very slowly around the world, then one day, boom, it’ll feel like it’s everywhere.
