5 simple fixes that make digital spaces calmer

https://knowaboutaccessibility.org/2025/07/17/5-simple-fixes-that-make-digital-spaces-calmer-for-neurodivergent-and-all-users/

When we talk about accessibility, most engineers think of screen readers, alt text, and color contrast. These are essential, but they’re only part of the picture. Digital spaces must also support people whose minds process information differently—people who are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise neurodivergent.

# A practical framework for designing human-AI oversight that actually works

_Many AI governance failures happen because organisations implement generic human in the loop without considering what they're actually trying to achieve, prevent, or control. This practical approach aligns business reality and emerging AI capabilities._

It synthesise this into 16 different research-backed approaches - from “circuit breaker protocols” for irreversible decisions to “feedback learning” for low-stakes automation. Each designed around giving humans the authority, time, and understanding they need to be genuinely effective - but also very cognizant of AI’s potential to automate routine tasks and perform consistently with the right guardrails in place.

The goal isn’t perfect categorisation but moving beyond generic “human in the loop” to build the systems we actually intend, not the ones we accidentally create.

# Real World Examples

- - -

**E-commerce: email marketing**

_Goal:_ Send personalised emails to millions (optimising for speed/volume and quality).

_Risks:_ Poor copy, spam risk (recoverable setbacks).

→ _Batch processing + Spot checking: _AI generates emails, marketing team reviews random samples pre-sending, and monitors overall engagement metrics, intervening when unusual patterns seen

- - -

**Recruitment: applicant screening**

_Goal:_ Support recruitment/HR team by processing hundreds of applications efficiently (volume, quality, compliance)

_Risks:_ Systemic bias, missing great candidates or hiring poor fits (high-impact failures).

→ Monitored automation + regular expert review + approval workflows
AI screens applications for requirements and fit indicators, flagging top candidates and clear rejections. Recruiters review candidates and can override any AI decision. Hiring managers get AI analysis alongside resumes for final interviews.

OG to 6G: the One-of-a-Kind Bronco Roadster

https://www.fromtheroad.ford.com/us/en/articles/2025/og-to-6g-why-we-built-the-bronco-roadster-concept

![](https://m.stacker.news/106185) ![](https://m.stacker.news/106186)

Six decades later, Ford's design squad was tasked with creating a concept Bronco that would capture the spirit of the original. "Both our Head of Design Todd Willing and Director Paul Wraith have challenged us to remember this key aspect of the OG Bronco: the compelling simplicity," writes Bronco Chief Designer Robert Gelardi. "How do we make just the essential cool? It's relatively easy to keep adding elements. It's much harder to create something compelling when you keep asking yourself 'What can I take away?'"

This philosophy of intentional reduction guided our approach to modernizing a classic. We had a great baseline with the sixth-generation Bronco. With this concept, we took the liberty to simplify the execution even further with a completely open roadster.

A Small Change To Improve Browsers for Keyboard Navigation

https://b.43z.one/2025-07-22/

![](https://m.stacker.news/106180)

If you want to navigate websites with the keyboard you can make use of the _'search feature (aka "quick find for links") in Firefox. Just press'_ and start typing. Any link with the anchor text you type will get highlighted. Once you press enter, firefox will navigate to the link under the highlighted anchor text.

Too bad most websites nowadays don't use links for navigation and actions. They have buttons and divs and once you click them stuff happens.

And here lies the limitation with the other two build-in find features. Though the `/` (quick find) and the `ctrl+f` (find in page) search will highlight any text (not just links), nothing will happen if you press enter on that highlighted text (once you dismissed the search dialog with escape).

It’s rare for a logomark to have such staying power. Just a perfect logo. Kind of wild that it was created, initially, only as letterhead for stationery. Perusing vintage movie posters, it seems like EON didn’t really lean into using the logo consistently until On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) — the sixth film, and the first without Sean Connery. EON had used the mark prior to that (including at least one excellent poster for Dr. No), but it didn’t appear on most of the posters for Connery’s initial run in the role: From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice (variations A and B). Amongst those, the logo only appears on the Goldfinger poster. They used to make multiple posters for every movie back then, so there might exist examples for all of them with the logo. But I think until On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, EON leaned on Connery’s face as the symbol of the franchise. From that point forward, though, Caroff’s 007-cum-gun logo was the symbol of the franchise. I can’t seem to find an official movie poster after OHMSS that doesn’t feature it.

Unthinkables: A Bold Branding and Packaging Design

Singapore famously banned the sale and import of chewing gum in 1992 to prevent vandals from sticking it on public property like train doors and elevator buttons. Breaking this law can result in a hefty fine. So, how did BBH Singapore get around this? They created a product that looks, tastes, and chews like gum but is made without a gum base. This technicality makes it legally permissible, allowing them to give Singaporeans the full gum-chewing experience without the risk of a fine.

![](https://m.stacker.news/104888)

![](https://m.stacker.news/104891)

The genius of this project lies in its branding and packaging design. The bright, eye-catching color palette of pink, purple, and blue immediately grabs your attention. The playful and rebellious tone is perfectly captured in the graphics, which feature doodles of stars, hearts, and arrows. The packaging boldly states, "FROM THE LAND THAT BANNED CHEWING GUM," making its statement loud and clear. The design cleverly leverages the very thing it's sidestepping—the ban—as its primary marketing hook.

The purpose of this website is to show people what was going on when they were born. The data used in this project is provided by the New York Times API. They have by far the best API I was able to find, with articles dating back to the 1950s. There weren't any other major newspapers that had an API with close to as much data. The closest was the Guardian API, but theirs only went back to the 1990s. I decided to only use articles from the New York Times because their API was by far the best. This tool works if you have a birthday after the 1950s or so.

CyberSmile Foundation teamed up with creative agency adam&eveDDB to launch "Words Are Permanent," an online safety initiative which utilized AI to drive home the realities of cyberbullying and abuse online. The initiative was featured across a number of out-of-home locations, national print, online publishers, and social media platforms.

The campaign took real-life abusive comments targeting young internet users and turned them into tattoos on the faces of children, generated using AI. The overarching message of the initiative was that comments on the internet and social media only take a moment to create but can last a lifetime for those being targeted.

The realistic AI visuals were created by Untold Studios and featured a number of calls-to-action, reminding people that their words have the potential to last a lifetime. Internet users were encouraged to consider their words online and directed to Cybersmile support services.

The big news today is that we’re revealing the final design for Pebble Time 2. The design that we showed off back in March were preliminary designs. We've been able to tweak and improve the industrial design quite a bit since then. I think it’s turned out fantastically well! I even have a working albeit early engineering sample on my wrist.

You’d think we’ve had 30+ years to learn and nail digital user experiences, right? You’d think that by now, flawless experiences would be the rule and not the exception. Right? Right? Disgracefully, far from it, as three recent experiences — that almost had me throwing my laptop out the window — showed me. It’s 2025 and absolutely basic usability and UX failures are still everywhere. Why are we in this mess? I have three hypotheses: 1) Companies chronically underinvest in UX; 2) too many “UX professionals” lack genuine expertise; and 3) even the talented UX folks have little structural power. The good news: seasoned UX professionals now have the best opportunity yet to found businesses that truly differentiate on UX— while others stubbornly leave this trillion-dollar opportunity on the table. If many established businesses won’t make UX matter, it’s time to build new ones that do.

Project Hyperion | interstellar ship design competition

https://www.projecthyperion.org

Project Hyperion is a design-focused competition aiming to advance the feasibility of crewed interstellar missions using near-future technologies. Launched in 2024, the competition sought fully integrated concepts for generation-ship habitats—structures, subsystems, and sociocultural systems meant to sustain life for multiple centuries.

# Design for Centuries

Project Hyperion explores the feasibility of crewed interstellar travel via generation ships, using current and near-future technologies. A generation ship is a hypothetical spacecraft designed for long-duration interstellar travel, where the journey may take centuries to complete. The idea behind a generation ship is that the initial crew would live, reproduce, and die on the ship, with their descendants continuing the journey until reaching the destination. These ships are often envisioned as self-sustaining ecosystems, featuring agriculture, habitation, and other necessary life-support systems to ensure survival across multiple generations.

The Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is) is delighted to reveal the winners of the Project Hyperion Design Competition, a landmark global challenge that called upon interdisciplinary teams to envision a generation ship—a crewed interstellar spacecraft designed for a 250-year journey to a habitable planet. The teams designed habitats of such a spacecraft that would allow a society to sustain itself and flourish in a highly resource-constrained environment.

The Project Hyperion Design Competition required architectural designers, engineers, and social scientists to collaborate and address critical mission aspects that enable a spacecraft to function as a closed society over centuries. The collaboration between different disciplines is key to finding holistic solutions that do justice to the complexity of the requirements, in order to provide:

- Habitability for 1,000 ± 500 people over centuries

- Artificial gravity via rotation

- A society that ensures good living conditions, including essential provisions such as shelter, clothing, and other basic needs.

- Robust life support systems for food, water, waste, and the atmosphere

- Knowledge transfer mechanisms to retain culture and technologies

The Priority Compass: Focus your energy on what really matters to you

https://labs.davidbauer.ch/priority-compass/

A simple tool for individuals, teams and organisations to focus your energy on what really matters to you.

![](https://m.stacker.news/103725)

## Here's how it works

You can use this tool for your personal or professional life. You can apply it to yourself only or look at how teams or entire organisations spend their time. It’s designed to be very simple, intuitive and more human-centric than just comparing input cost with output value.

The idea is to think about your activities along two dimensions: How valuable are they for what you want to achieve? And how much do you enjoy spending time on them?

Made by David Bauer, a curious generalist who loves making things.
