A common misconception surrounding Bitcoin is its alleged facilitation of illegal activities. This narrative, while prevalent, ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ of Bitcoin's intrinsic properties, and ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜ of financial crimes in the global economy.

Firstly, the transparent nature of Bitcoin's blockchain is often overlooked. Unlike traditional cash, every Bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger, accessible to ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ. This level of transparency makes it an unfavorable tool for illicit activities.

Moreover, the argument that Bitcoin is predominantly used for illegal transactions is Reports from leading blockchain analysis firms have consistently shown that illicit activities represent a ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฆ of overall Bitcoin transactions. In contrast, the scale of money laundering and other financial crimes through traditional banking systems ๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ด any illicit use of Bitcoin.

It's crucial to distinguish the technology from its misuse. Just as the internet, despite its revolutionary benefits, can be used for nefarious purposes, Bitcoin's innovative technology The focus should be on the ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ด of crimes, not the tools they occasionally misuse.

This is why Bitcoin is nowhere close to being a โ€œhavenโ€ for illegal activities. Its open ledger makes it a poor choice for criminals, who use โ€” and ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต โ€” US dollars for illicit activities far more often. Like cars and the internet, Bitcoin is just a tool, one that allows for a transparent, truthful, and efficient financial system.

Yes, Blockstream's Jade wallet and Trezor are also open source. Not mentioning them was primarily a consequence of not providing an exhaustive list, but just a few examples.

As for the ColdCard not being open source:

nostr:nevent1qqstp3a930ewv0s87d7uy6q04s8mcw7hqp2u66pfks4ycavk2yyankcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qgs97jq6fffysr27y7trqwac04rhx6q5yx9usvawzeccxffa9053hmcrqsqqqqqpdngq9k

True, the ColdCard is not Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), but its software is nevertheless available for review and modification from the public. Likewise, its hardware design is also open source because the schematics and design files are available for public access. You can find the source of these files at the link below.

https://github.com/Coldcard

The ColdCard hardware wallet is indeed considered to be a fully open source hardware wallet.

ColdCard's software is open source because it's publicly available for review, modification, and redistribution. Its hardware design is also open source because the schematics and design files are available for public access. You can find the source of these files at the link below.

Since both the software and hardware are open source, the community can independently verify the security and functionality of the ColdCard wallet, and contribute to its overall development. For that reason, the ColdCard is open source.

Open source hardware wallets receive development contributions from the wider community, leading to Closed source wallets, on the other hand, rely solely on their own development team, limiting the pace and diversity of improvements.

They can also continue to be improved and iterated upon, when their parent company no longer supports it, or if they close down entirely. The broader community can continue to maintain and update the walletโ€™s design and software, leading to an ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ-๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜ that will be useful to more users.

There are several available options for fully open source hardware wallets, including the ColdCard by nostr:npub1wu4aye7ll0lnrrg638e90sehzsgpzx5t39t3mwl05aa0d0ap08esdz3vw0, Passport by nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j, and the nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl. There are other hardware wallets that are ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ open source, like the BitBox02, KeepKey, and even Ledger, but they each have elements that are closed source.

And today actually marks ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—น๐˜† ๐Ÿฒ ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜€ since the ColdCard was first released!๐ŸŽ‰ While I am not endorsing one specific hardware wallet over another, it might be worth it to at least check it out on Coinkiteโ€™s website, especially on its 6th birthday.๐Ÿ˜‰

Open source hardware wallets provide superior transparency, security, and community support. Theyโ€™re aligned with Bitcoinโ€™s core principles, making them a preferable choice for user autonomy over closed source options.

Remember to give this a ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐Ÿค™, and ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐Ÿ”„ it with others, so they can also keep their bitcoin safe and offline.

And be sure to ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐Ÿ”– this so you can reference it later, when buying a hardware wallet.

Know any other advantages of open source over closed source?

Let me know in the

Did you know you can now find the latest Bitcoin headlines just by asking SatoshiGPT?

Head over to https://chat.openai.com/g/g-wNCUpwLP8-satoshigpt and try it out yourself!

It wasn't a bug, but a natural consequence of restricting the miners from using any of their new bitcoin until 100 blocks had passed. This rule continues today, but only had this effect on the first block, since there were none that preceded it.

This is a testament to the fact that Satoshi didn't see himself above anyone else, and subjected himself to all the rules of the protocol that everyone else followed.

Few understand this. But hereโ€™s why๐Ÿ‘‡

Whenever a miner finds a block, they receive the subsidy of new bitcoin as a reward, along with transaction fees. Originally, this subsidy was 50 bitcoin. After a few halvings, it is now 6.25 bitcoin.

The very first block, the Genesis Block, awarded Satoshi Nakamoto with the first 50 bitcoin, but The reason for this lies in a rule that all miners must follow.

When a block is found, the bitcoin from the subsidy is not immediately spendable. It must wait at least ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐˜€ to โ€œmatureโ€, before the miner can spend it. This coinbase maturity does not apply to the transaction fees, however.

The way these blocks are counted, maturity is measured starting from the block before they were mined. So if you found block 800000, the count of 100 blocks would begin on that block, by referencing block 799999 as โ€œblock 0โ€ in that count.

The Genesis Block had no block before it, so without a reference point, Bitcoinโ€™s protocol will never be able to count 100 blocks for those first 50 bitcoin to mature.

This is another way that Bitcoinโ€™s earliest days contrast with that of many altcoins. Not only did Satoshi not mine in secret, or have premine to give himself and his friends new coins without doing any work,

Did you already know that? Imagine *you* had 50 bitcoin, but they could never be spent.๐Ÿ˜ณ

Give this a ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐Ÿค™ and a ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐Ÿ”„ so others can learn about this, too.

Are you still facing this issue now? Many of OpenAI's services were down earlier, around the time when you left your comment, so that could have been the cause.
