I believe that mathematics is an essential aspect of learning about universe, which people often overlook while learning from podcasts & LLMs. Although learning from LLM & podcasts is better than not learning at all, people tend to repeat what they have heard without understanding the underlying fundamentals.

While large language models can answer simple questions, for more complex ones, we have to learn fundamentals to even understand those answers.

As a value investor, I find Charlie Munger's recent WSJ-published arguments to ban bitcoin/crypto and thank the leader of the Chinese Communist Party to be embarrassing and sad.

I'm currently writing a research note to 10,000 retail and institutional subscribers on why it's dumb.

Munger has a history of arguing that someone should be able to "steelman" their opposing view if they are going to have an opinion on something, which means being able to articulate an opponent's viewpoint more convincingly than even they can. Recently on CNBC, Munger was quoted on his historical claim and then asked by the anchor to steelman bitcoin/crypto after his WSJ op-ed, and he was unable to and didn't even try to.

He doesn't know anything about Segwit, Taproot, block size limits, whether a base layer should be Turing complete or not, anything about power dynamics between nodes, developers, and miners, etc. Absolutely no clue, and no attempt at a clue.

Such a bad viewpoint doesn't only reflect his old age, but also reflects his inherent ethics at a structural level from inception as a banker. It undermines his entire legacy.

Even on the history of money and its problems in developing countries, Munger would be schooled in a Twitter Spaces by any random above-average bitcoin twitter anonymous account.

It's sad to see.

What the hell are Zaps? Or what's the difference between Lightning tips and Zaps?

Simply put, Zaps are Nostr aware Lightning tips. They are integrated with Nostr in a way that allows the sats sent to be tallied and displayed on an individual user's note. Everyone can then see the value of that individual note. That is the key point.

If your Lightning wallet does not support Zaps, you can still send Lightning tips, they will just not be counted and displayed on Nostr. You can still send and receive sats! This is the whole point of Value for Value.

The only Lightning wallets that support Nostr integration (NIP-57) are the following:

Many others are working on adding support for this. This includes Wallet of Satoshi, BTCPay server, Bitcoin Beach, and probably many more.

I spy

Ordinals - just an arbitrary scheme for agreeing on a number for each sat. Bitcoin equivalent of collecting coins or banknotes that have some significance to you, really nothing at all here for people to get upset about. Ignore if you want to, have fun with it if you want to.

Inscriptions - different thing, but *use* ordinal theory to agree on who now owns an inscribed sat if you transfer it. Inscriptions IMHO are genius and cool, and good for Bitcoin. For people that are angry, the original sins were agreeing segwit discount and taproot without fully understanding the repercussions. Max block size is 4MB, deal with it, that argument is over. Also LMAO Bitcoin accidentally has better NFTs than all the Shitcoins *and* now shitcoiners are running Bitcoin nodes. Consensus rules are the rules, not what people ‘want’ Bitcoin to be used for. This is good for Bitcoin.

Casey’s chat with Odel on Citadel Dispatch was good, important points around how Inscriptions now entangle Bitcoin with 1st Amendment free speech because inscriptions are clearly speech not money. Also potentially help with future security budget concerns and ensuring we have a healthy fee market into the future (but also inscription hype could just die out)

The only way I’ve been comfortably using the current DM spec is on burner accounts and sending DMs to itself. Useful for automation, but not actually useful until we have clients that can manage multiple accounts. Hopefully we will get a new DM spec soon.
