As a value investor, I find Charlie Munger's recent WSJ-published arguments to ban bitcoin/crypto and thank the leader of the Chinese Communist Party to be embarrassing and sad.

I'm currently writing a research note to 10,000 retail and institutional subscribers on why it's dumb.

Munger has a history of arguing that someone should be able to "steelman" their opposing view if they are going to have an opinion on something, which means being able to articulate an opponent's viewpoint more convincingly than even they can. Recently on CNBC, Munger was quoted on his historical claim and then asked by the anchor to steelman bitcoin/crypto after his WSJ op-ed, and he was unable to and didn't even try to.

He doesn't know anything about Segwit, Taproot, block size limits, whether a base layer should be Turing complete or not, anything about power dynamics between nodes, developers, and miners, etc. Absolutely no clue, and no attempt at a clue.

Such a bad viewpoint doesn't only reflect his old age, but also reflects his inherent ethics at a structural level from inception as a banker. It undermines his entire legacy.

Even on the history of money and its problems in developing countries, Munger would be schooled in a Twitter Spaces by any random above-average bitcoin twitter anonymous account.

It's sad to see.

Someone should tell him Bitcoin can’t be banned. It will outlive him, as it will all of us.

Par for the Course with these numb nuts

Hate to break it to you. The aliens 👽 just changed their mind to pay a visit.

As someone who appreciates his take on EBIDTA (i.e. "bullshit earnings") I am really disappointed in his lack of informed opinion about bitcoin.

Oh well, "Old man doesn't want to learn Bitcoin" is now a news item 🤷

That he could be schooled by any above-average bitcoin Twitter anon is far from sad to see.

That he behaves as he does isn’t sad, It’s his incentives. It’s expected.

Exactly!

#[4]

I look forward to reading it. Keep up the good work!

The most important point they are ignorant about is the fact that they couldn't ban Bitcoin even if they wanted to. No matter how much they lobby and how much power they consolidate it's not going to happe. For them realising this will be a humbling experience.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

It's very sad to see but not surprising given his and Buffett's lack of understanding of technology.

There's the famous video from 2012 of Saylor saying buy all the Apple stock you can. Berkshire didn't start buying Apple until 2016.

An above average bitcoiner on Twitter spaces could school 99% of economists because Keynes was the wrong model to follow.

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.” -- Warren Buffett

Agreed Lyn and can’t wait to read it. Still working on setting this app up though. Should be done by the time you finish it 😀

looking forward to reading it!

I don’t really understand why traditional media like WSJ rails on bitcoin. If they bought bitcoin and were honest about what it offered they would benefit in the rise in price.

Yeah. And between publishing that silly bit of misinformed opinion from a nobody (when it comes to crypto) and then today's misinformation and FUD about Bitcoin Core, have lost a what little respect I had for WSJ. They are cheerleading SEC actions on "crypto" and meanwhile doing their best to make Bitcoin look bad as a technology. Good news is, they are wrong.

It is sad…well put #[1] hate to say it but at this point the glue factory doesn’t even want him…time to put his beliefs out to pasture.

Charlie Munger is irrelevant!

fiat mindset. forget that old fart

💜

100%. Disruption happens. Kodak, Nokia & Sony Walkman found that out!

Really happy to read this

I don’t think his viewpoint undermines his legacy at all. His legacy is a world of underemployed and underinsured ex-workers left over after he bought successful companies, fired a bunch of people, bought back a large percentage of outstanding shares to boost stock price, and did this with money he borrowed at 0% from the banking system.

He can’t argue for Bitcoin, because arguing for Bitcoin is arguing against his entire existence.

He is being unethical and probably getting paid to trash #Bitcoin or just getting dumber with time... like stupid dumber square.

#[0]

He has become a joke. It's really quite sad.

Old man doesn’t understand bitcoin. What else is new

Beautifully said, Lyn. I've been a huge Munger fan for several decades. It's really sad to see his blind spot on this issue.

One of the downsides of old age is brain inelasticity. Paradigm shifts are very hard to grasp when you are almost 100 years old. Sad that his (and Buffets) reputations will be tarnished because of their inability, or lack of desire due to their success in the legacy system, to understand bitcoin.

Not only did he not know, but when asked to steelman, he called people idiots for investing in it

Just paid for this content. Very nice elaboration on this point🤝

A research note? I'ma go ahead and assume that means a Nostr note.

If only Howard Buffett would have schooled young Charlie on money

Wow. This is fire.

"random above-average bitcoin twitter anonymous account" 😆

I love it when Lyn is relentless. She’s always so MaYsured and prudent.

#[2] is 🔥 as always

Kudos to the reporter ... slip him a curve ball.

Wasn't she the one that made the face of "oh dear god" when interviewing binance scamCEO ?

Amen

Not sure if he’s ignorant, I think he may be fully aware that Bitcoin fixes the corruption that made him rich.

Buffet said Bitcoin is rat poison. Munger might realize who the rats are.

Lyn, fire this over on Twitter as well for the folks that haven't joined the movement yet (yes I looked and didn't see it there).

What you said needs to be seen by others that highly respect your opinion and might be outside your reach from your 10,000 word piece to investors. You fight/argue well. It's fun to watch!

I wouldn't expect a 99 old, to get orange pilled..OH well😒

#[0]

Whats really surprising is how quite he is to call for banning, that is so anti american and anti western ideals in general.

I think there was some paper produced by the IMF or ECB whatever one of those big institution that said we do not like bitcoin but banning it would be perceive as anti democratic / freedom.

You just vaporized him 😱

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

As Max Planck formulate “science advances one funeral at a time.” Same applies to these guys... hopefully in 10 years WSJ, CNBC and Bloomberg won't find anyone to speak this nonsense or spread FUD.

There is still a great need for fact-based, well-founded enlightenment also for the investment world - i appreciate your work, youre doing great!

It is. If I ever live to be 99 I expect that I will have lost my marbles too though.

So true!! 🙏 The world needs more of your insight and Charlie needs to be put to pasture.

I love Charlie Munger. I love bitcoin. I don’t know if I’m a value investor, but they only invest in things they can understand. Charlie is a 99 year old lawyer turned value investor. How many of these folks are alive, let alone fans of Bitcoin? All attention, even scary words like “ban” — are great things for bitcoin. It even makes for great content, right Lyn? I love that he hates it. And hates it so publicly. It reinforces my belief in bitcoin and Charlie for that matter. I know where each stands. Embarrassing and sad have its place, especially in government talk and social media, but think not here for Poor Charlie.

Noticed that the MSM plays this game of asking people like Munger, Buffett, Jamie Dimon or Christine Lagarde of their views on Bitcoin.

It is highly amusing to hear what they have to say, considering the fact that the fiat system is the only reason they are millionaires/billionaires.

Of course they will keep saying stuff like Bitcoin is a rat poison or it has to be banned, etc, etc...

Their livelihoods depend on BTC not succeeding.

Their careers are based on trying to get more people to believe in what they have to sell - fiat, debasement of the currency and "trust in the system" meaning trust in them ( for being such economic and business wizards)!

Their massive wealth is built on fiat and BTC threatens it.

Very sad that some people are looking at those guys for inspiration and ideas... They represent the opposite of what BTC was created in a first place!

Here, I said my piece !

Love you Lyn!!!

Just sent you 210 rat poisoned sats. ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ let them keep talking. Well respected legacies and reputations will be totally destroyed the more they open their mouths.

💞

Ultimately, it's up to individual investors/savers to make their own decisions about where to invest/save their money. However, by being informed and taking a long-term perspective, they can help protect themselves from some of the risks and pitfalls associated with investing/saving in a rapidly changing and hyped arena.

Mungers views should be discounted by anyone with more knowledge on the bitcoin topic than he has. (Everyone).

Retail is the main audience of his comments. retail investors can be particularly vulnerable to these kinds of tactics, since they may not have the same level of knowledge or experience as professional investors. This can make them more likely to be influenced by marketing or to follow the herd mentality, even when it may not be in their best interests.

If Charlie can turn the Bloomberg retail crowd to his point of view it can only help him keep the advantage he amassed over the last 9 decades due to advantageous market conditions.

Wery eloquently said. Thank you

Thank you. Markets can be a snake pit..

Love the "I as a rich old white man deep in the US financial system just can't see what possible use case bitcoin could have" takes

I don’t think you get your point across by saying Buffet and Munger are the beneficaries of a rigged system. They might be in part, but they are primarily great investors who consistently have invested in great businesses that represent real value. They stay away from leverage and speculation, so they are imo not a part of the fiat problem. The fact that they might have the wrong opinion of btc is a separate issue.

You said it!

#[0]

Nailed it.

Fiat financial legends are about as impressive as steroid era home in un champs.

Sure, they’ve got skills.

But they’ve also got an asterisk attached to their name.

zap to show that I agree with you.

Exceptionally hard for that generation to understand digital scarcity. Throw in entrenched in traditional finance and it's a lost cause... Or at least rare.

Weird that so many would value his opinion on Bitcoin.

At what point does mainstream just stop asking him for input? Crazy.

👌🏼 💜 ⚡️

Munger has made much of his fortune on the inefficiences caused by fiat currencies.

I have found that explaining why I am buying a monetary asset to people who can only think in terms of “value investing” and DCF models incredibly frustrating.

I don’t expect certain people to get it. Their mental models are seemingly wired not to get it.

😂 crazy to think a pleb could school this crusty dude but so true. You’re awesome, Lyn!

Your post is getting a lot of engagement.

Added to the https://member.cash/hot feed

Amen sister.

I love listening to all their interviews and shareholder conferences. So much to like and Munger and Buffett in their wisdom and humor. However, on bitcoin — and China, you’re 100% right on the pair, especially Munger. Pathetic.

"I'd tell him to go fuck himself"... "I think he's a piece of shit"

-Larry Leppard

(I'm a big fan of Leppard)

Aaaaand thats why I follow you and not him!

He’s had a great contribution to the investment world but to deny bitcoin the way he does is not ignorance… it is deliberate

#[0]

Yes it is sad but it’s also time to give Charlie a break. He’s given us a century worth of wisdom. It’s bound to deplete. This path we trod our own. As SJ once said:

“… Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.”

Hero lost. So sad to see 😞

Cursed dinosaur

Michael Jordan on the Wizards

Why anyone who isn’t up to their eyeball’s armpits in fiat (aka 🧻) would bother listening to either of the muppet old men about anything more advanced than an eight track tape deck, is beyond me.

This is “our time” “our market”, we do this “our way”. We learn from the fükery of failure’s past & build stronger & more advanced ways of doing things. The Old Man Muppets can keep yelling at clouds. Any who decide to follow them, prove to be less than worthy of benefiting “tomorrow” b/c they’re stuck in not “today”, but “YESTERDAY”.

A great take as usual, Lyn

#[0]

Can’t wait for this

Well said.

#[0]

He’s 900 so he doesn’t get it & he missed it. Which is probably the Hardest pill to swallow.

Old man yells at cloud. ☁️

Bitcoin doesn't care. 🦡

我是个老头,理解不了新技术,但是比特币就是太坏了🤣芒格一辈子都在舔法币的奶油,现在站出来反对可以颠覆他的东西也能理解,好消息是他99岁了。

He’s never read Satoshi’s white paper and is incapable of understanding the math.

100% agree. His resorting to ad hominem after he was specifically quoted about requiring stronger arguments than that was surprising and sad.

Can’t wait to read your article.

Preach

next time post with NIP-57 configuration!?

I agree it’s very sad. And he’s been a hero of mine since 2005. A couple of things…his inception as a banker? He was never a banker to my knowledge. I believe that’s factually inaccurate. Anyhow, his Bitcoin opinion is deeply uninformed but it’s his obsessive fanboy attitude about China that really has me wondering about him. He talks as if they’re enlightened or something and cares nothing for the suffering that occurs under the authoritarian regime it worships. Truly an odd choice for a 99-yo American billionaire.

The ability you have to both understand and articulate a viewpoint on complex topics is something I admire and to which I aspire. Thank you for being so liberal with your thoughts. It inspires me to be better.

Buffet and Munger both made their fortunes investing in fiat businesses. Insurance. Banks. Monopolies. That kind of thing.

They postulate anything else is a sucker's bet since there is risk in a business that requires actual productivity and competition.

Much safer to invest in the parasites that will be bailed out by the taxpayers if they over extend.

Disgusting.

Your research note was great. I always look forward to its arrival.

Thank god now I can read long texts without actually scrolling and trying to make a coherent whole by joining up puzzle pieces. I mean this is not really a comment on your text but I couldn't keep it inside. I mean after we have so many ways of sharing information with each other trying to read long threads was the thing that made feel old. Now I see this and read it as it should be read made me feel joyful =)

As always perfectly articulated argument. I have so much respect for you Lyn Alden and I wish all the best for you and thank you for keeping us informed with your articles, notes and podcasts you join. Thank you!

🤦‍♂️

Guess he’s not seeing states put bitcoin as “currency” thru their state legislatures

I get the feeling people like him and Soros saw China’s mix of authoritarianism and capitalism and want to see more of it in the West. Money people get rich while State and corporations control via social credit score and state money what the peons can do.

over 500 likes and no zaps? what the hell is wrong with all of you?

He's un-zap-pable 🥲

well Lyn is a she and I just zapped her

How? I don't see the zap icon on the note

Oh, Lyn Alden, now I see it. Didn't know she was here 🥳

Yeah, the zap icon only appeared after I 🤙'd her post. Weird.
