Alaskan. Electrical enginerd. Hunter, fisherman, gardener. Ham radio operator.

I managed to get down to the Anchor River for a quick Parks on the Air activation yesterday. Ionospheric conditions were good with a SFI of 160 and an A Index of 6. The weather sucked. It was overcast with a temperature of 15F and a north wind strong enough to shake my truck. Definitely too cold to pee outside. I was running FT-8 on a yaesu FT-891 radio and ATAS-120A antenna, from inside the truck. I managed 35 contacts. The longest was 8400 miles, into Uruguay. I also got to see 11 moose and the stunning views of Mnt Iliamna and Mnt Redoubt. Here is a photo I took of Iliamna. It's 10,000' high volcano, 45 miles away.

Get out there with a spud and a dirt shovel and start chipping. It's a great upper body work out.

Pro tip: It you go out and snowblow the road to the left of your driveway and mailbox before the plows come through, there won't be much of a berm in your way.

The price of stamps goes up Monday. Don't forget to stock up today.

I purchase crushed oyster shells and give it to my chickens for calcium. I could go down to the beach and gather as many salt water clam and mussel shells as I want for free. Is this a viable option? Would I need to process them in anyway beyond smashing them into small pieces? Are there any risks I've failed to consider?

All those lucky SOB's on the flight when the door plug fell off got $1500 in exchange for being a little scared for 20 minutes. Sign me up.

It's pretty icy out today, time to put the boot chains on.

Get yourself some Yaktrax icetrekkers. They're the bomb.

They say sixty-five percent of all statistics are made up right there on the spot. Eighty-two-point-four percent of people believe 'em

Whether they're accurate statistics or not.

The majestic bald eagle is at the top of the food chain at the transfer station, snatching up the tastiest trash nuggets before they get compacted.

Nobody here in Alaska has hand cranked cars 🤣, just slightly oversized starting batteries and AC powered block, coolant and/or battery heaters. You really don't need anything special when it's above 10F. Way up north, some guys run Webasto brand diesel drip heaters to keep their trucks warm.

I was planning to run the Pi on a 12V USB converter connected to the starting battery through a switch.

We'll see what happens. If it breaks, I'm only out $60.
