Advertising supported content on the web was doomed. As the ad dollars grew, they could never outpace the ever increasing inventory created by the explosion of content, so ad prices fell and continue to.
And, like you say, the staff sizes were made for the print era. Unsustainable.
And yes, distribution controlled by third party platforms left only crumbs for the creators.
Could Nostr help? Absolutely, but many journalists still embrace the top down, one to many control that traditional media had and will need a change of mindset.
Although long form has and advantage too in that it is read by more clients
Was thinking about using a replaceable list event of links (plus OG data)
What I _really_ want is for the list to be created by the user account but tough to pre-sign so maybe not in the MVP
And yeah, was also thinking LLM newsletter in next phase. So many (too many?) cool things to do but want to focus on getting _something_ out
Was going to bootstrap with web links but ideally yeah, eventually flow zaps out to the news sources
I started porting a little Mastodon project that was a Nuzzel for Mastodon https://readily.news Sends a daily digest of links shared.
But for Nostr it seems like it makes more sense to put the data on a relay and make it a special purpose client. Almost there. Maybe have something in a week or so

nostr:npub1yxzkmtuyctjw2pffp6e9uvyrkp29hrqra2tm3xp3z9707z06muxsg75qvv has a great elegy for Vice which goes in to how the big social media companies, especially meta, killed the company with rug pull after rug pull.
Although it doesn’t mention nostr or any emerging solution, this gets at why what we’re doing is important. We’ve got a solution to the payments part of the problem, we know how to talk about that. This essay gives us a roadmap to talk to publishers and journalists about why they should build their business on a permissionless open protocol, eg nostr.
Here’s the essay as a series of posts, tweet stream like: nostr:note1ea0cqlj7zdytvcs7vktu77g29uwcy7z4npauz9eyplf2c9wu7e5sq68tkz
And here is in an easier to read way, on Cory’s own site: https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/24/anti-posse/
We should be taking up the banner of Nostr as a powerful tool in implementing “POSSE (Post Own Site, Share Everywhere), a strategy that sees social media as a strategy for bringing readers to channels that you control:”

Unfortunately even smart journalists that might influence the companies they work for think Nostr is blockchain, and they think blockchain was just a scam that came and went. So they'll likely be headed to Mastodon or BlueSky first. Doing my best to dispel those wrong ideas. And the other issue is media thinks in terms of reach, also wrong, but also currently a hurdle to get them on Nostr
Legacy Media includes a 100 year old family owned local newspaper so that probably wouldn't fit into the same category you are thinking about

I’ve seen so many people say they won’t use Nostr because we don’t support delete. This is really frustrating, because Nostr DOES support delete, it’s right there in the NIP’s! We’ve got delete in nostr:npub1pu3vqm4vzqpxsnhuc684dp2qaq6z69sf65yte4p39spcucv5lzmqswtfch, but most apps don’t expose the functionality to users because they either don’t like the idea of delete or can’t be sure that something is 100% deleted. That misses the point, delete is as much about social signaling as it is about getting rid of the content.
Here’s my argument for how we should think about and support delete in nostr. In case your client doesn’t support long form content, here’s the njump link: https://njump.me/naddr1qq2ksje3g9trxujpxymyxjjlg5ckjmmrtguyxq3qpu3vqm4vzqpxsnhuc684dp2qaq6z69sf65yte4p39spcucv5lzmqxpqqqp65wk06e7u nostr:note1hldm4z430w76dn2ywzwjnafytnvyt7gsg6nhk3l8a3x8utzl88asl06u8m
Delete works fine. If a relay doesn't respect it, eventually it would become an unpopular relay. If people think/thought there weren't copies of their deleted tweets somewhere, they were kidding themselves

Mentions Nostr. Previously stated Nostr was built on blockchain. I informed the author and he corrected that.
Cool browser extension for Mastodon user discovery. Nostr turns everything on it's head so I'm not sure how something like this could be ported https://streetpass.social
