Maybe. maybe not. I don't use the alby wallet directly. I use coinos and link it to alby for native amethyst zapping. I am hoping that this means I'm in the clear concerning Arby's wallet service. But honestly, I don't know for sure.

Start out right. Get a node up and running if you don't already have one. Not technically necessary, but if you aren't using your own node's mempool for constructing block templates, you are trusting someone else's. I recommend nostr:nprofile1qqs9df4h2deu3aae83fmet5xmrlm4w5l9gdnsy3q2n7dklem7ezmwfcpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq5xamn8ghj7dnvv45xs7tywde8g6rpvakkjuekw46nvar4vdhxgan6wumkxatzwpckk6rk0puhjdm2da5k7ce5x4kkkumjx3jkzepwdahxjmmwqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wd9hxvmckqw0xz.

You can get Datum installed very easily on Start9 to be constructing your own blocks and either solo mine/lottery mine, or connect to OCEAN for more regular payouts, so long as you can get a CLN Lightning node up and running.

From there, I'd start out with a few Bitaxes to dip your toes in. If you find it's not your thing, you will have still learned a ton about how Bitcoin works and you'll be running a full node, which is good for privacy if you are using it for your actual transacting on-chain.

Solid advice. Thank you.

If a pleb wanted to get into mining with limited experience and an approximate $2000 budget, where would you point them?

Links appreciated.

So... getalby.com is where you login to your wallet. The alby dashboard is where you can view your sats. After you're logged in, the url is getalby.com/dashboard

Yes. I totally understand. This processtook me more than a week of fiddling to get right.

#Amethyst is indeed an android based client. Our experience will likely diverge to the point where I am not of any help.

But in the mean time, some of the terminology that can help lead you to a solution:

NWC = nostr wallet connect. It's how I connected alby to amethyst so I could zap folks. I don't know if Damus uses nwc. You'll have to look into it.

Setting up my client to recieve zaps was a little different. I had to add my nostr wallet username to my profile settings in Amethyst for this step.

I'm fairly new to #Nostr. I use #amethyst. I am probably not much help here.

I can say, however, that figuring out how all of this works is a fundamental issue with attracting people to #Nostr. It will be hard getting noobs to stay and engage without knowledable people being willing to meet these people where they're at. It just becomes an echo chamber of devs and wannabe devs.

Here's What I can offer:

You view your sats from within your wallet (it sounds like you use #alby).

Alby can be connected to your nostr client (I've never used #Damus so I don't know how this process works, but on Amethyst it required digging into settings and using #NWC. It was kinda complex, but doable without much outside help).

I believe alby is discontinuing its free wallet service, so you may need to find other services to use as a wallet.

I figured out that you can use #NWC to connect another wallet, like #coinos, to alby. In that case, you can login to either coinos or alby to view your sats. But you could probably just use 1 wallet service connected to Damus and be happy. I use coinos in combination with alby because alby allows for a direct integration with Amethyst. That may not be a thing for you.

Viewing sats from within your nostr client (Damus) is probably not possible. So, after successfully connecting your wallet to Damus, you would have to leave the client and open your wallet to view your sats.

In Amethyst (my client) linking your wallet to recieve sats is a different process then linking your wallet to send sats. That's a rabbit hole that took me several days to understand.

I hope others here can fill in some of these gaps and offer more help. Feel free to ask me any direct questions about any of these steps, but I am rather noob myself.

Good luck! 👍

Funny thing how they teach our 'leaders' to treat us. I was just talking to someone about the way he treats his employees... dude had a technique called 'intermittent praise.' Fucking gross.

I zapped via the qr code. 200 sats. Zap pow.

It makes a lot of sense. Coinos should update or something. I'll repay your zap as soon as I can.

If I had a working non-custodial solution I wouldn't switch either.
