Depends a much on your climate as it does on your preference to get down to ground level.

I put in several raised beds for organization, but my climate is rough enough that I have to deal with soil temperature at the root being pretty high.

I'm considering pulling them out and going with sunken beds as were more traditional 100 years ago or more. (In my area)
