There has been a lot of talk about a recently disclosed problem with the Ledger hardware wallet, and whether itโ€™s safe to use it for storing your #bitcoin offline.

Ultimately, this choice is up to you, but

More on this below๐Ÿ‘‡

While hardware wallets in general can be an excellent method for storing your bitcoin long-term, Such devices allow for public verification of the deviceโ€™s entire operation. In the spirit of "๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ'๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต, ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜บ," open source hardware wallets align with Bitcoinโ€™s fundamental ethos.

Open source hardware wallets receive development contributions from the wider community, leading to Closed source wallets, on the other hand, rely solely on their own development team, limiting the pace and diversity of improvements.

They can also continue to be improved and iterated upon, when their parent company no longer supports it, or if they close down entirely. The broader community can continue to maintain and update the walletโ€™s design and software, leading to an ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ-๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜ that will be useful to more users.

There are several available options for fully open source hardware wallets, including the ColdCard by nostr:npub1wu4aye7ll0lnrrg638e90sehzsgpzx5t39t3mwl05aa0d0ap08esdz3vw0, Passport by nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j, and the nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl. There are other hardware wallets that are ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ open source, like the BitBox02, KeepKey, and even Ledger, but they each have elements that are closed source.

And today actually marks ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—น๐˜† ๐Ÿฒ ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜€ since the ColdCard was first released!๐ŸŽ‰ While I am not endorsing one specific hardware wallet over another, it might be worth it to at least check it out on Coinkiteโ€™s website, especially on its 6th birthday.๐Ÿ˜‰

Open source hardware wallets provide superior transparency, security, and community support. Theyโ€™re aligned with Bitcoinโ€™s core principles, making them a preferable choice for user autonomy over closed source options.

Remember to give this a ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐Ÿค™, and ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐Ÿ”„ it with others, so they can also keep their bitcoin safe and offline.

And be sure to ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐Ÿ”– this so you can reference it later, when buying a hardware wallet.

Know any other advantages of open source over closed source?

Let me know in the

Might be geographic latency? I know bitcoiner social and offchain pub are US West coast. If you're in Europe you probably have ~170ms delay at least with a wired connection. Wireless adds jitter.

Prepping short ribs. Trying this "Epic Brewing Big Bad Baptist" barrel-aged stout. It's actually pretty good! Boozy but not bitter or too sweet. I'd say it's a nice alternative to Bottle Logic

In the long run, the killer app on nostr is probably Bitcoin.

nostr feels like the early world wide web now, except there's lightning. But we know how the web ended up. The web never really had such fluidity with payments though.

I think relay ops will need to paywall features such as likes. And long term storage. We might break even doing stuff like that. There's nothing relay ops can do to lock users in. That's why I think this all still works in the end.

In the near term you might be right about poor incentives for building clients.

My low effort guess might be cors? But I have also noticed that some relays work while others don't before

I haven't heard of any other relays adopting lmdb yet. So it's still the fastest
