I'm not talking about a 2FA sent over SMS or a pin sent over SMS.
This is the pin/password you set when you first register a phone number to Signal and have to remember it. The pin doesn't recover any chat history or contacts on Signal either. All it does is prevent someone from registering that phone number on Signal again.
So ownership of the phone number doesn't matter, because if they try registering it with Signal again they won't be able to without the pin/password that was set. And even in the extremely unlikely chance they get your pin/password somehow, it won't contain any chat history or contacts.

Okay, I see now. Then it's not as bad as I expected. My examples certainly apply to mainstream services, like WhatsApp.
That said, my argumentation regarding numberless alternatives still remains standing. :)
Second thing is, why use a service with a phone number, if you have so many easier alternatives available?
You talk about VPNs, Tor, Bitcoin, etc... Why make life so hard?
There are so many instant messengers, which don't require shit.
For example, XMPP is dead easy to set up. Have already set it up for several people with no technical knowledge at all (you can be lucky, if they find the on/off button on a device) & it works without any hassle.
Now, enable OMEMO & you get free encryption without any effort. You usually don't even need to press a button, because it's usually enabled by default.
There are tons of XMPP servers, which don't care about your account, at all. & even in some weird scenario, where they do, you can switch accounts within minutes, by just choosing an alternative server.
Simple & way less difficult & time-consuming than your Signal journey over three oceans. :P
Temporary phone number means, that you have no ownership of it & it is inherently insecure. Having a phone number is already bad enough, but not having & using a temporary one is really bad. Every following Code/PIN will be sent to a phone number literally anyone could use at that moment. So, if there's account recovery via phone number possible, which most services definitely offer, you basically offer anyone the possibility to steal your account with potentially compromising data.
To me, temporary phone numbers are absolutely useless, except you need a throwaway phone number for a lottery or some other bullshit you'll never use anyway. For a private(!) messenger I would never use a phone number. Let alone a temporary one, anyone can have access to, at some point.
That's what you get for relying on a huge French company. They even take everything you paid for, no matter how much you paid, just because you did not log into the account for a while.
I personally have experienced such idiotic policies myself by having been a victim of them.
I've lost a couple of accounts due to such rules. One of them was a #diaspora* account, which really disappointed me, because I was there, to get to know an alternative just to realise my account has been purged when I didn't log in for a couple of months.
This also reminds me of how centralised #Mastodon is in a way.
Years back, I created an account on a server, that was brand new back then.
My account is still there, but I wasn't able to log in, because apparently they changed some login stuff, so my old login does not work.
Now, I would need to beg the server owners for their mercy, so my account gets loginable, once more.
This means, if the server owners wouldn't like me, they could simply refuse access.
Needless to say, I didn't beg, because the only time I'm involved in a begging situation is when someone's begging me.

Due to this #Ubisoft fuck up, I logged into my uPlay account (yes, that's how it is actually called) & was relieved to have everything still work.
Out of curiosity I enabled the Beta version of the client and...
Like, this is the stupidest UX overhaul I have ever seen. They copied the worst game launcher on the market, i.e. Epic Games' launcher.
Epic Games' launcher is the worst client I have ever used for any games. Literally any other client is better, Origin, Blizzard, Bethesda (back then), some small game companies' clients, not to mention Steam has gotten so much better recently.
But from all these successful clients, they pick the one with the worst performance & worst UX. The Epic Games client.
The Epic Games launcher is the worst launcher of all, because it barely has any features, you cannot configure shit, it takes *forever* to load one single page on a gaming PC & constantly issues annoying updates, which sole purpose are to grab even more personal information about you.
I guess, I shouldn't have been surprised to see Ubisoft of all do this, since they are famous for this kind of shit, at least since The Division!
#FuckEpicGames #FuckUbisoft btw.
First warning sign, we are talking about a shitcoin:
There was a premining phase. :D
The problem is, you can never change it. Ever.
You can change your mail, you social media accounts. You can even change your phone number.
Changing your iris or eyeball is another story, well if you don't want to get blind, at least.
This is the case for all biometrically relevant data.
Now, that means, that it doesn't need a purpose now. It does not need one tomorrow.
It will follow you around your entire life, until at some point, tomorrow, in 1 year or in 30 years, there will be some huge thing that will fuck up your life based on something you said, did or whatever & it will be proven that you did, said or whatever it, because they have your biometric data.
For fingerprint scans, you need to touch something. For eyeball scans, you literally just need to look around & accidentally look in the wrong camera lens.
I'm currently fucking around with transitioning existing production #Helm releases from how they were on pre-2.7 Rancher to post-2.7 #Rancher.
Really annoying, because Rancher just deprecated it, making this a huge breaking change, but they didn't provide a fix for existing deployments. You basically have to purge the old release (not a good idea in a lot of production scenarios) or fiddle with this old release, punch & grab it by the Gopher, until it finally starts working, as it should again, i. e. being in the new Apps section, rather than in the Legacy section...

Thanks for the heads up...

I've read through the entire controversy and it's interesting to know, thanks.
However, I probably will consider switching to it, once Gitea actually did some stupid design decision out of greed. As long as this does not happen, I don't see a huge problem in a company being created to give developers a chance to make an actual living with it.
For now, if the only thing Lunny has done "wrong" is making a company out of it, it's not a reason to leave the entire project.
Found this proper project skeleton structure generator. Configurable via self-explanatory YAML files.
You write a YAML, simply configuring how your project root should look like, run the CLI tool & there is your project structure created by a language & tech stack agnostic little utility. :)
I plan to replace my Git repository templates with this!
Do audiobooks count, too? :)
After I finished Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, I was satisfied with it & immediately continued with my current experience, which is Speaker for the Dead by the same author. :D

I think, you meant to say "iD.TRI". :)
It's not endorsed, because the government is not interested in your privacy. :)
It wants you to be easily scannable.
I would stay away from all services requiring a phone number, because this system is already broken & it won't come back. There are also luckily plenty of alternatives to Instant Messengers, which require phone numbers, like Signal.
For example, you say "burner number", so you might hail from the USA or some other country with similar laws.
If you are in the EU, you are screwed.
There are no burner numbers.
The only way to get a "burner" number is to get someone else to register the number. However, even then you're screwed, because the number will deactivate once you stop wasting money on that phone number. So, once you pay cash into the number, they already can track who's the actual user of the phone number now.
Or if you let someone else cash in, they can ask at least two people to expose you. First, the number seller, second the one who cashed in.
Therefore, numbers in the EU for example are already entirely broken & unfixable, because no government will make them less controllable & more free, ever.
Which is why using a burner number is not an international option, if you don't want to exclude a big part of an entire continent.
As is seen with e-mail addresses, which are often obfuscated on purpose in the internet, it's a huge problem to just potentially get messages from scammers, due to your address being by default reachable by anyone, since that's what the address is for.
Now think about how easy & normal (not!) it is to change a phone number. Compared to phone numbers, getting scam messages on your mail address is a piece of cake, because usually people keep phone numbers all their life or maybe just change it once, while you still have a chance of changing your mail address. Even if it's a pain in the ass, compared to changing a phone number it's at least realistically possible.
