It's been an amazing week in Riga. The response to my messaging NIP has been really quite overwhelming. 😊 I have really appreciated all the time many of you took to ask questions, give me feedback or ideas, introduce me to people who can help, or to just say you enjoyed one of my talks on the topic.

I'm headed home today with a lot of gratitude and a ton of motivation to get this right. Very much looking forward to the day when I can delete telegram from my phone once and for all.

So for FOSS design / development, I would not look for design help to validate the initial product.

Use existing frameworks to cobble something together. Get early users and listen to their feedback carefully.

If there’s potential, get a designer who will improve the overall UX. Don’t worry about styling yet.

If product already validated and has users then design is the product. You want a product designer who positions the product, helps refine UX. Design cannot be an afterthought. It’s not lipstick on a pig.

Designers have to consider the foss project they would like to contribute to. It’s hard, because you have no idea what the team is like unless you contribute here and there and observe to see if your contributions are implemented. Sometimes they won’t be for the right reasons. What designers want most is to see their work come to fruition in as close to perfect as possible. This goes on their portfolio and it sucks if design is good but implementation is potatoes.

But we also have to stay humble and realize when we make mistakes. Developers often have good UX insights because they are constrained by code and frankly laziness. Laziness is a friend of UX sometimes. Not always. The designer who doesn’t see acknowledge their own blind spots is not advancing themselves or their goals.

Unfortunately, zaps are not a signal of quality, but I like the idea. For me, it was also just the idea of what is important to me, personally. What I would consider high-quality. AI can analyze the actual content, after all.

I didn't say it was a protocol flaw. It's a flaw in our attempt to just rebuild what we already know, instead of putting more thought into the workflows.

My point is the opposite:

The protocol and other innovations make a lot of complicated stuff bizarrely easy, and we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of it because we've been caught up in rebuilding stuff we're used to.

There are entire use cases that are only feasible, now, and they suddenly became feasible for everyone, everywhere, at almost no cost.

I think I have an answer to your "Who should run a mint?" question 😂 .

Everything is compatible with a timeline. That's why everyone is afraid to break with the timeline concept. It's the easiest and the simplest to explain.

They also mix "timeline" up with "appears in a vertical, scrollable list, even though you can put things in a list in a non-timestamp order.

For instance, if I open up my notifications app, do I absolutely have to see everything in the order it was sent, or should I see more high-priority items first? If I open my communities app, do I have to see everything in the timestamp order, or could I see threads my best frens are in, or that focus on my favorite subtopics, further up in the list?

And why do I need to tell the app whose stuff I'm going to be most interested in? Is it not obvious who they are, from the open data set? People are so afraid of smart code that the clients are kept willfully retarded.

At the same time, I might want to only lurk on some stuff (leaving less of a data trail) or I want to specifically avoid someone that I'd been speaking to regularly, without having to mute them. Can the client figure out a way to help me do that?

I might just keyword mute "nostr" and see what happens

I'm more of an architect than a coder, so my instinct is to go back to the blueprint, if I see a problem, rather than applying more ducktape and splints to a cracking wall.

It is still early days on #Nostr.

We can still fix stuff in the plans.

We can still scrap some plans and build an entirely different building.

Close family member got cancer diagnosis today.

There aren't many devs here that have experience with monetization in very open, competitive markets. Most either have zero entrepreneurial background and/or come from some kind of SaaS model.

Damus' model sounds like they're starting a bar:

- where the beer is free, but it's a mix of all kinds of beer (of which 90% is straight up ~~piss~~ Heineken)

- where you can stay for max 3 hours

- where some people pay a monthly fee for staying longer and access to some backroom

This, in a street where you have millions of other bars:

- that all cater to their own very specific beer-lover audiences

- that are paid, but beat anything else in terms of price-quality

- that can change their pricing any second to adapt to the volatile market forces in the industry

- where customers are treated as part of the value add of the bar

Every service is directly monetizable.

When people choose to not monetize that is mostly because of trust/reputation/generosity.

Like babysitting on the neighbor's kid, no problem.

If you then decide to accept anyone's kid and think the fact that this kid already lived for XX days is gonna solve your problem, well... 🙃

I think you better just have a price list.
