Really sad. This would’ve been better discussed in a community maybe where the whole context of this nearly year long argument could’ve been referenced or the people involved would’ve known it. I’ll take responsibility for that part anyways. But I’m not retracting my statement in its original context:
We should not be worried about recruiting non-privacy/freedom people onto Nostr. Those are my “normies.” This is not the platform for them, and the value proposition of Nostr (which is high and why I’m here) does not resonate with them at all.
Those people will be plenty motivated to learn how it all works when they’re persecuted for the first time on a MSM site. *THEN* we should be on fire to help and support them in that learning.
Nostr should not experience exponential growth by appealing to the non-pilled. I even wrote an article on this.
( https://blog.thesamecat.io/exponential-growth-is-cancer/ ) It should be building the best tools for those who are already pilled and focus almost solely on them. There are enough people on Nostr who are not devs to make sure the learning materials are there. That’s their role. We all have one.
This was a cart and horse conversation that’s been ongoing for a long time. My stance is we should absolutely not be appealing to these people because they are not ready, nor are they motivated. For those who become so, we should be ready.
If I haven’t gotten around to mocking you, let me know so I can add you to the list. 🤡
Oh, and it’s not about criticism of Nostr. Quite the opposite actually. nostr:note1q4cvpgq2j8hc0l3wjnxx8squstyuga8tj2r4p8s0kgc83c4z0cmsm7z536
PeerTube is mostly limited by encoding capability of the server, which is one of several issues every host will face. The second is storage.
This is usually the type of thing I have in mind as well.
I agree with this. The question is one of should Nostr be trying to appeal to normies or not?
You may be missing some context of the conversation. This post wasn’t made in isolation.
But by all means, assume you know me, the situation, and what I’m talking about well enough to assume moral superiority and the right to judge my actions and words.
I’ve done plenty to help others on Nostr. And I run my fair share of Nostr services, many of which are free. What I’m done with is talking heads speaking out their ass about luring normies in, having this idea that Nostr and BTC fixes everything and is appropriate for every use case, etc.
If you believe that BTC and Nostr fixes everything, that everyone is going to use it, and that we’re going to somehow make it attractive to the average user, feel free to filter me from your feed. I’m done giving homage to the false idol, so I’m probably going to piss you off.
I work in a position that requires me to help and educate end users every single day. I’m not fooled. The average end user trying to use technology is about the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.
Me either. Unless they are genuinely engaging and trying. Then I’ll stop what I’m doing and take the time. Otherwise, they can get rekt.
Damnit man. You took the words right outta my brain and got them in black and white.
People don’t value something until it’s lost. Then they’ll go to that extent to learn to preserve it. Nostr will always be for refugees.
Thankfully there are options and more are coming soon. Thanks for raising awareness.
Nostr is ready for normies.
Normies are not ready for Nostr.
Tell the normies to fix their shit and quit trying to make Nostr work for them.
^^^ this.
Why the ever living fuck is anyone trying to attract the same people who keep pushing for every other social media to become draconian?
I don’t know in what universe PayPal is cumbersome to use. I’ve had 10’s of thousands of dollars run through PayPal over the course of years and years. Never had an issue with a single payment. I use lightning for the censorship characteristics NOT for ease of use because that’s a joke. I also pay less in fees (aggregate) on many transactions on PayPal as I do on BTC.
Nor are any of the people doing any crypto things you just mentioned “normies.” People get so lost in the bitcoin bro culture they’ve completely lost touch. 99.9% of the world has never used *any* form on crypto, and most of them don’t care to.
Normies have to have Microsoft force them to update their computers. Normies reset their passwords via “forgot my password” three or four times a year and they set the fucking thing. Normies are not going to deal with a mile long nsec, different addresses for BTC and lightning, block times, fee fluctuations, etc.
Normies like stuff like the company you are working for does. Just custody their keys. Make Nostr no different than twitter. That’s what they want. They want twitter without evil space man.
This affects b2b users, not consumer accounts.

I do not think there is any evidence whatsoever to back that claim up. People are stupid and lazy and do not want to learn jack shit to use social media. Period.
And they’re not.
I’ll see what I can do.
Is my relay still working over tor for you?
We were thinking about using FireMonkey but we decided to go with WinForms and WinUI3. Pascal looks interesting but it is hard to learn another language.
