The story of Circlevilleās redesign, known as the āSquaring of Circleville,ā is really a tale of how practicality often overrides historical uniqueness.
When the town was first founded in 1810, the circular design seemed like a fitting tribute to the Hopewell earthworks that originally occupied the site. But as the town grew, it became clear that living and expanding in a series of concentric circles was⦠not exactly convenient. Streets werenāt straightforward, intersections were confusing, and property boundaries got messy. Think about how much easier it is to plan streets and lots when everything fits into neat squares and rectanglesāno strange angles, no awkward building plots.
By the 1830s, the push to reorganize Circlevilleās layout had gained momentum. There was a growing sense that the circular plan just didnāt suit the needs of a modern, expanding town. The project to replace the circular streets with a traditional grid layout took several decades, finishing around the 1850s. The transformation was gradualārather than demolishing everything at once, they reworked sections over time. As new buildings went up and old ones came down, the circular streets vanished piece by piece.
This change makes Circleville unique among towns with ancient origins. While most places try to preserve elements of their heritage, Circleville took the opposite routeāprioritizing growth, commerce, and functionality over its original symbolic design. Today, the only clues to the circular past are in a few odd street alignments and the location of key landmarks, like the courthouse. If you look closely at old maps of Circleville, youāll see how dramatically the townās layout has shifted.
Itās a bit ironic, isnāt it? What started as a way to honor the past; building a town around ancient earthworks; ended up being sacrificed for the future.
Do you think they made the right call, or would you have liked to see them try to preserve the circular design somehow?

Currently running a #Start9 #StartOS TOR only Bitcoin / Lightning / BTCPay server node including my own lighting address behind a clearnet domain+ssl. No VPS, no complex (and slow) TOR forwarding.
I'm using the free tiers of Cloudflare websites, ssl, dns and tunnels and the StartOS wrapper I made for the cloudflared tunnel client: https://github.com/remcoros/cloudflared-startos
Basic knowledge of how to setup a cloudflare domain, ssl and a tunnel is required but it's mainly clicking through the UIs.
Leave a comment if you're interested in setting up something like this and have questions.
Trying this now! I found this note from a simple google seach š±
