The anti green energy brigade are right about needing fossil fuel as the backstop baseload at a national level. I'm sat here in a raincloud drawing power from a grid not running on sunshine or wind. But what if that need for constant energy for all is a poorly conceived notion? Is it really so bad that I'm not as productive economically today as I was last week?
There's a famous story from the gulag, can't remember who wrote it, but the only ones who survived were those who slept furthest from the stove.
Obviously someone's going to say that with endless energy supplies the fire never goes down. And I would respond that humans who don't know hardship are the weakest, physically and mentally. That's not some macho 30-something alpha male BS, the stove story backs up the observable fact that life , like muscle, only gets stronger in adversity.
So why do we strive for perfect energy supplies?
To be the most productive people in the graveyard?

L'ATTESA DI UN MOMENTO
40x40cm, Oil on canvas
Completed October 29, 2024
Between fogged glass and bare branches,
a sip of stillness settles slowly,
As autumn touches the golden pear,
keeper of hushed thoughts.

You sir are an artist in more ways than the brush!
Remember the artist who refused to display at the national Gallery? He was illiterate but as a young man studied calligraphy and signwriting. He could calculate the number of characters per page of any font quicker than his colleagues could open their abacus, and he drew and painted letters as shapes without understanding what they were. That's art too, hey!
I don't much care for TR but that degree of OTT sentence could be one of those political decisions (like US confiscating Russian assets) where the pretence is over. What foreign state could ever trust the US with their money, and what right-thinking Brit could fail to gulp at this "first they came for him" moment
If you have no intention of paying back a debt and you have a playbook of endless excuses ready lined up til your creditor is old and infirm...and if the pushback from the odd feisty OAP gets a little persistent you have no trouble escalating words to bullying, before making the threat of petty violence with no problem delivering on ultimate violence...
Another good storyline for a movie about Frank Underwood 's dark political successor in the state pension office
Goose fat is the secret to how grandma makes roasties
I'm not ancient but I'm old enough to spot some patterns.
It doesn't surprise me that Nostr is so constructive. The culture of an entity comes from, I hesitate to say "the top" where a decentralised entity is concerned, so let's say "the initiators"
The culture of FarceBook and Twitter comes from the top, no doubt.
In all cases, the majority of users fall into line and become the best version of that culture. And those "few" who feel uncomfortable with the culture leave.
But nothing is forever smooth.
I remember when Twitter was so positive til it wasn't. and Facebook apparently wasn't too bad til it wasn't.. Both were assaulted by money and failed to maintain their culture and integrity built up over how many years?.
So which social media culture is going to prevail now? The most powerful encumbents or the most constructive newcomers?
As long as the driving force behind Nostr stays true to the founding principles and resists tinkering with a great idea, the positive culture will snowball. Free people can be the best versions of themselves. And then let's see what happens.
It's honeymoon time for a good while yet, but the community should be prepared for hijack attempts by literal dark forces. History says the Nostr paradigm has til its 8th birthday before hitting its first existential crisis. Just like Bitcoin, just like humans with our mystical but true 7 year itch that takes a while to play out.
Hopefully I'm just voicing what has been obvious to the smart cookies from the start and Nostr stays the best version of constructive.

#asknostr getting the idea that relays are like websites the nostr:nprofile1qqsqsy2tgn9xul84l4kuumkfgn0qk4sx6tmv4g8d8ad2w74mja92zecpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtc8tvaz8 explanation. I'm going to launch a website, mirror it on npubpro all being well. I also want to make sure as best as possible that the community I build up around my website is able to find out conversations in one place, at least.
I know half the fun of Nostr for some is not knowing what is read or replied to where, but thats not going to work for most normies. In fact the first reason to diss Nostr will be when I send an "important" message and it doesn't arrive! And they rightly say that doesn't really happen in the legacy world.
So at this stage of life, with enough on my plate as it is, what am I looking at to have access to an OGE relay that could be a reliable repository for our little community chit chat, And to also distribute that content to other relays in case the home relay goes down, so at least the content stays online somewhere.
I don't have the headspace to set anything up in my kitchen. I just want a monthly bill and links to "my" relay (s) to send to my community members when they sign up to Nostr.
Any ideas please.
nostr:nprofile1qqsqqqqqqzp8l74ff0l29zxrml8yggk8jnamje39k6e3ayzf7u5awqqdfzwk6 hi will your service work for the OP idea?. Does each community member need to subscribe 4000 sats a month?

Not sure if this is a photo of heaven or hell.
100% agree. The idea of paying chatgbt to eat my lunch grates. I do wonder though how these privacy ai learn if not from users. Is it a clever use of words? The big scandal is they buy from chatgpt that has learnt from your neighbour.

“The European Central Bank’s arguments against Bitcoin warrant some introspection from central bankers themselves. If Bitcoin's redistributive effects are problematic because they transfer purchasing power from latecomers to early adopters, how is this fundamentally different from monetary policy that transfers purchasing power from those far from the money supply to those closest to it? Both mechanisms seem to create winners and losers through the redistribution of purchasing power rather than through productive economic activity. In any case, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to central bankers if Bitcoin’s increased adoption becomes an obstacle to the ability of central banks to dictate monetary policy. This has been a long standing goal of Bitcoin enthusiasts. From its inception Bitcoin’s self-professed goal has been to provide an alternative to centrally planned monetary policy.”

When an incumbent whines about innovation in their domain they are signalling their own failings. And when you know they are lying about the innovation, it is definitely time to ignore them
The storage issue alone has me sold on the idea. My android pos feels like a dustbin that I paid Google to fill with update garbage
Voted for @hrf at anthem awards for their cbdc tracker. No doubt nostriches know what cbdc is but I bet most of our nearest and dearest don't. At best it is known as bitcoin but better, or bitcoin but more convenient and safer etc, or a great way to receive handouts without having to apply for or sign anything https://celebrate.anthemawards.com/PublicVoting/#/2025/sustainability-environment-climate/awareness-categories/non-profit
Years ago I remember telling a family member that when they hear of a thing called lightning that's when it's time to load up on bitcoin because that's when btc becomes useful to the masses. Keep it going!
