Top 5 Questions to ask your grassfed beef supplier

1. Do your cattle spend 365 days a year roaming the pastures eating native grasses and forbs?

2. Do you feed a commercially grown crop to your cattle during any time of the year? Alfalfa and other supplemental feeds are grown using pesticides, herbicides and other things which you might not want in your food

3. Do you treat your cattle with dewormers? Lice control fly spray? These products are often injected (yes, seriously) or fed to cattle in their salt or mineral supply. Oftentimes, a rancher might not even realize it is part of the feed or supplement they are buying!

4. Do you feed anything with Porcine fat or other animal byproducts? Porcine fat is actually not required to be listed as an animal byproducts so people could be feeding tubs of molasses which contain added Porcine fat and it will say no animal byproducts which is totally shady.

5. Do you feed ionophores? Do you treat your cattle with antibiotics? Which shots do you give your cattle?.

Some ranchers live in climates where supplemental feed is simply a part of life in the winter or other dormant months. You need to ask what they feed so you can decide where on the spectrum you want to be. Some people send their cattle to feed on corn stalks which have been sprayed with Roundup and other toxic chemicals. They might not have considered that this would be something a consumer needs to know. It is really up to you to ask the right questions.
