๐ŸŽ“ Trainee economist, lecturer and populariser. My research include Bitcoin, finance, economics, geopolitics and the future. Awareness = freedom + knowledge.

๐ŸŒ Since the Genesis Block, Bitcoin has taken a central position in the debate on innovation, decentralization and financial freedom, challenging traditional monetary systems and becoming not only an economic tool, but also a cultural and technological phenomenon, introducing a new model for the use of computational resources: mining.

โ™ป๏ธ My studies are not limited to analyzing its economic-financial impact, but we will focus on two often neglected dimensions: environmental sustainability and its social potential.

๐Ÿ—“ Bitcoin: 2008 Whitepaper and 2009 Genesis Block. Why?

๐Ÿ“‰ Bitcoin was born at a time of profound global crisis: in 2008, the collapse of financial markets and banking institutions revealed the fragility of a system centered on monetary and financial authorities and triggered a widespread distrust of traditional economic policies.

๐Ÿ’ป Bitcoin fits into this context of economic and social instability as an innovative response: an open-source computer protocol, based on cryptography and distributed consensus, that eliminates the need for intermediaries and offers an autonomous alternative to the centralized control of monetary resources.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Bitcoin was born with the intention of creating a secure, transparent and independent medium of exchange capable of overcoming the limitations and risks highlighted by the global financial crisis.

๐ŸŸ  Bitcoin: the concept of this revolutionary social good was born on October 31, 2008, when Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper via a mailing list entitled: "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System".

๐Ÿ“ฐ The official launch of Bitcoin took place on January 3, 2009, with the creation of the first timechain block, the Genesis block, containing the first 50 BTC and a message destined to go down in history: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks".

๐Ÿ“‰ This message is not only proof of the block's creation date, but also an implicit comment on the instability of the traditional fractional reserve banking system.

โ“๏ธWhy? In which period was Bitcoin born? What was the economic and social situation in the world?

๐Ÿ“œ On this day, 92 years ago: Executive Order 6102, USA, April 5, 1933.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ The Executive Order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 5, 1933, required citizens to turn over all their gold (coins, bars, and certificates) to the government by May 1 of that year.

๐Ÿ“‰ This measure was enacted in the context of the Great Depression, which began in 1929, with the goal of stabilizing the financial system and increasing federal currency reserves.

โ›“๏ธ The law prohibited the private possession of gold beyond a small amount allowed for personal or collector use, and provided for stiff penalties or even imprisonment for violators. In some cases, the government resorted to using the army to continue the process of confiscating gold from its citizens.

๐Ÿ” This date was chosen by Satoshi Nakamoto as a reminder that governments always have a way of controlling everything and everyone, without privacy and problems, mind us.

๐ŸŽ‚ Today is Satoshi Nakamoto's birthday and he turns 50 years old! ๐Ÿฅณ

๐Ÿชช According to Satoshi's profile information registered with the P2P Foundation, the date listed as his birth would be April 5, 1975.

๐Ÿ‘ค Obviously, Satoshi's identity remains unknown to this day, but the date is no coincidence.

๐Ÿ“ฐ According to some studies, the date of April 5 would date back to the same day, but 1933, when Executive Order 6102 was issued in America by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

โ“๏ธWhat is Executive Order 6102 and why did Satoshi choose this date as his birthday?

โ“๏ธDid you know that "Bitcoin" refers to the entire ecosystem (computer protocol, open-source software, etc.), while "bitcoin" refers to the virtual currencies (21 million at most, with which you interact in the Timechain) and whose label is "BTC"?

๐Ÿ” This difference is substantial when talking about Bitcoin, it serves to shed light on the thin line between the social good we are going to talk about and virtual currencies that (unfortunately) also lead to financial speculation by many.

๐Ÿ“š Throughout my studies, I have only talked about Bitcoin, with a capital B, the social good that is revolutionizing the world.

๐Ÿ—“ In recent years, the world has witnessed a growing focus on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, issues that have become central to political, economic and social agendas worldwide.

โš™๏ธ In this context, two seemingly distant technologies, Bitcoin and nuclear energy, are emerging as protagonists of a potential paradigm shift. What better way to understand the central theme of my study than to begin with an analysis of the title of my thesis:

"Bitcoin and Energy: Towards Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability."

๐Ÿ’ฌ Today I want to share a thought with you.

๐Ÿ” I've always been a hodler, but lately I've been experimenting with various Bitcoin features, including on-chain payments and lighting networks.

โšก๏ธ Every time I use LN, I get scared: it's super fast and very low fees.

โš ๏ธ Because yes, there are network fees, mind you, but let's understand them: how much are they really?

๐Ÿ’ฑ To understand Bitcoin's LN fees, we need to talk about the fiat system for a moment: the smallest fiat transaction can be one cent (euro, dollar or whatever).

๐Ÿ† LN fees are in the order of thousandths of a fiat, which means that to spend one cent in fees on the Bitcoin network you have to do 2 or 3 transactions that are secure and instantaneous, not like the fiat system. Crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿ“‘ My thesis continues with two more quotes, this time about nuclear energy:

1. "The problem today is not nuclear energy, but the heart of man." Albert Einstein;

2. "A nuclear power plant is infinitely safer than eating, since 300 people a year are choked to death by food." Dixy Lee Ray.

๐Ÿฅ‡ The first one needs no introduction, while the second one is less well known.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ Dixy Lee Ray was an American politician and biologist from the Democratic Party. In 1975, the position of "Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Scientific and Environmental Affairs" was created, and Ray was the first person to hold the post. She left the position shortly thereafter to become the 17th Governor of Washington State.

๐Ÿ““ In his 1973 book, "The Nation's Energy Future: A Report to Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States", he describes how nuclear energy can lead to decarbonization, a very timely topic that we will discuss later.

"If you don't believe or understand it, I don't have time to try to convince you, I'm sorry."

๐Ÿ–Š This is the first sentence of my thesis.

The second is: "The nature of Bitcoin is such that once the first version is released, the principles of the protocol are immutable forever."

๐Ÿ“„ Those are some quotes from Bitcoin's initiator, Satoshi Nakamoto, and so I wanted to begin the long study that will lead us to understand why Bitcoin is a social good.

Here is the abstract of my dissertation.

๐Ÿ“ƒ The thesis analyzes the synergy potential between Bitcoin and nuclear energy in the field of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

After defining the role of Bitcoin as a social good and nuclear energy as one of the safest, cleanest and most economically competitive sources of energy, the paper examines the environmental impact of these technologies using an econometric methodology based on panel and regression models.

The aim is to assess if and how the integration of Bitcoin mining with nuclear power generation can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the valorization of unused energy surpluses and the promotion of a resilient energy model.

The results obtained point to promising scenarios for cooperation between these two fields, suggesting a multidisciplinary and pragmatic approach to tackling the global energy transition.

๐Ÿ“ถ Stay tuned.

๐Ÿ“– To begin the sharing of my academic studies, I will share with you the title of my research thesis: "Bitcoin and Energy: Towards Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability".

๐Ÿ“š A meaty topic, but one that we will explore in depth together. I hope to open a dialog or start new studies on the topic.

๐Ÿ“• I just finished a 2-hour lecture on Bitcoin in a high school class (my high school) and I didn't mention price. Bitcoin is social!

๐Ÿ’ฌ It was 2 hours of open dialogue about my educational and study experience, many topics of economics, finance and especially Bitcoin were touched upon.

๐Ÿช™ It's always nice to talk to the guys and shed light on the social aspect of Bitcoin. I hope I even gave them the doubt to go deeper, I'm happy with how it went.

๐Ÿ“ถ Stay tuned.

๐ŸŽ“ Before I begin by sharing my studies, let me introduce myself a bit: I am an economics and finance graduate from Italy, I am 23 years old and I have been studying Bitcoin since 2021, the year I realised its potential.

๐Ÿช™ Over time, I have increasingly delved into the various aspects of Bitcoin, until I realised a fundamental piece that has enlightened me: Bitcoin is a social good. In the course of this adventure, I will explain what this means and why.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Furthermore, I am a great believer in nuclear energy as a clean, safe and cheap source to quickly achieve global decarbonisation, we will also discuss this.

๐Ÿ“ถ Stay tuned.

Hello everyone! I am Jacopo, a graduate in Economics and Finance. I wrote my dissertation on Bitcoin and energy and over time I will share the data obtained from the study. Stay tuned.
