Julian 'Mendax' Assange was one of the original cypherpunks.
From an early age, he was compromising computer networks, not to commit e-crime or to deface systems, but with the goal of making information free.
According to various sources, he was alleged to have been involved in hacks on the Pentagon, US Department of Defense network (MILNET), Nortel, Telecom, Australian National University, and in the Worms Against Nuclear Killers (WANK) attack on NASA.
For his digital escapades, he was labelled Australia's most notorious hacker.
In 1993, Assange assisted the Victoria Police Child Exploitation Unit in prosecuting individuals responsible for distributing child pornography.
He started an ISP, created the Rubberhose deniable encryption system, moderated the AUCRYPTO forum, ran the Best of Security website, and co-founded Earthman Technology, a company specialising in intrusion detection and Linux kernel hacking.
He also developed open source software, including the Usenet caching software, NNTPCache, and Surfraw, a command line interface for web based search engines.
During his time with WikiLeaks, he worked with others for a week to break the US military's encryption of the now infamous video showing US soldiers in Iraq intentionally killing 18 civilians from a helicopter.
Julian first sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012, and has been denied his freedom since. Following his arrest in 2019, he has been incarcerated in Belmarsh Prison, while contesting extradition charges brought by the US.
In 2019, UN special rapporteur, Nils Melzer, stated that "in addition to physical ailments, Mr Assange showed all symptoms typical for prolonged exposure to psychological torture, including extreme stress, chronic anxiety and intense psychological trauma."
Later, Melzer said that "Assange's health had continued to deteriorate and his life was now at risk".
On a subsequent visit, Melzer accused the UK government of torturing Assange. He said Assange's "continued exposure to severe mental and emotional suffering... clearly amounts to psychological torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."
The New York Times has stated that it and other organisations obtained the same documents as WikiLeaks without government authorisation. It said it was not clear how WikiLeaks' publications were legally different from other publications of classified information.
Julian has now received over 24 international awards and honours for his journalism, including the Amnesty International New Media Award and Times Person of the Year.
He is a husband and a father.

I don't believe this conflict is between Israel and Hamas / Hezbollah.
The intelligence failure seems too convenient an excuse to initiate a kinetic conflict with Iran.
The US is now involved in three proxy wars:
- China v US with TW / JP / AUKUS and Asian partners
- Russia v US with Ukraine / EU / NATO partners
- Iran v US with Israel (and likely Turkey and the Saudis)
Egypt is trying to keep its head down.
I hope the impact to civilians will remain at a minimum, but I fear it's going to get a lot worse before it starts getting any better.

Been following the development of the Bitkey and am quite impressed.
