Putting the sauce in awesome

God damn it, ChatGPT is on to me.

Which means they’ve probably sucked up my posts.

I actually think now is the best time to get into tape (both cassette and open reel) because lossless digital streaming is plentiful, but it’s ephemeral—your favourite album can disappear at a moment’s notice.

Tape gives you physical media to archive with, and it’s easy to use.

The reason I love audio cassettes has little to do with them being HiFi. They’re great because they’re:

* compact

* durable

* recordable

* re-recordable

* moddable

They add character to sound too.

Folks, I think Atari just won CES:

* Portable console with Trak-Ball, paddles, and numerical pad—which plays modern and retro games!

* Mini version of that portable console

* Full size arcade stick with Trak-Ball

* Mini pinball machine with classic Atari games

“Stretch” (2019) by Yerke Abuova, oil on canvas.

Tremendous use of colour, especially with the gradients of the woman on the swing. The pinks and blues are wonderful too.

I’m keeping my eye on Yerke because she has a tremendous future ahead of her.

Fortune’s advice to CEOs: if you want to save on the cost of hiring a bodyguard, then be likeable to the public—don’t be hated.

It’s almost as though you achieve cost savings by… not causing pain and suffering. 🤔

Just a reminder:

Big Social only allows free speech when it’s consistent with their bottom line.

Big Social only moderates when regulators say they must.

They exist in order to own your online life.

Ugh. Liberals, don’t do it.

Don’t make Christy Clark the next Prime Minister of Canada. Not even for a moment.

My last remaining respect for Liberals will disappear if you do this.

This is the CES news I care about most:

Lenovo just announced the Legion Go S, the 3rd party SteamOS handheld approved by Valve.

It runs at 1200p, has a 120hz refresh rate—and costs $499.

Nintendo should be afraid.

I know what you’re thinking right now: “Chris, I don’t care about those damn robotics. I’m having my lunch.”

Well, you’re going to care about robots. You’ll have no choice. Because everyone will constantly ask you, “What do you think about robotics?”

There will be thinkpieces. Oh, the thinkpieces. I bet you can’t wait to hear Jim Cramer yap on about robotics. He’ll be serious about it—it’s the future. And you’ll hear it again and again chanted through a megaphone:

“ROBOTICS IS THE NEXT INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION!!!”

Hey, you know that guy you met five years ago at your local tech meetup who says he made a fortune on NFTs and the Metaverse?

He’s a robotics expert now. And he’s investing in the Apple of Robotics. He declares we’re on the precipice of a brave new world.

You talk to your aunt. She tells you robotics is the next big thing.

You talk to your Uber driver. He tells you robotics is the next big thing.

You visit YouTube. Logan Paul tells you robotics is the next big thing.

What’s this? Pornhub ads selling you on a robot girlfriend who can satisfy all your desires.

Robotics. And you just want to eat your lunch.

And hey, look at this.

The “turn your smartphone into a robot” app has already been done.

But it gets little attention now because it’s crowd-funded. Hence, LOOI is the Pebble of smartphone robots.

It’s too early in the tech hype cycle.

In five years, a robotic startup will launch an app that transforms your smartphone into a robot.

You’ll place your smartphone into a wheeled shell featuring a happy face, always in a good mood. They’ll market this smartphone robot as a child or pet companion and highlight its benefits for the elderly. Perhaps it will assist with fitness goals or cooking.

This app will raise millions upon millions of dollars and dominate tech news outlets like TechCrunch and The Verge.

Then, someone will point out that it’s just a smartphone in a shell with wheels. The entire concept will collapse, fading into obscurity—until a new version emerges and once again captures the attention of the tech press.

Listen, by this time next year, we’re going to see a lot more self-described robotics experts.

What will make them an expert? I don’t know, but their claim to fame will be that they’ve been into robotics longer than you have.

In two years, you’re going to start hearing more and more about how robotics will change everything—how the blue-collar market might vanish, how everything is shifting to robotics. You’ll have a few folks in your feed declaring that now is the big moment for robotics: you better get with the program or go home.

In three years, everyone is going to be a robotics expert—or at least that’s what they’ll say. You’re going to have folks popping in, talking about how robotics will change B2B sales, how robotics will change production, how robotics will change content, how robotics will change art. Apparently, robotics will be the next big industrial revolution, bigger than the Internet itself.

How do I know this? Because that’s what happens with every hype cycle. People smell the money. There are no gatekeepers, no one around to separate fact from bullshit, but there will be a lot of experts.

And why do I say robotics? I knew the next big tech hype cycle would be robotics because it already dovetails with AI.

My personal opinion doesn’t matter though, though, because Jensen Huang was up there banging the drum about robotics at CES, saying—and I quote—“The ChatGPT moment for general robotics is just around the corner.”

It is officially the beginning of the robotics tech hype cycle.

You folks owe me a beer!

Because last year, I said that robotics would be the tech industry’s next big hype cycle. And here’s Jensen Huang at CES banging the drums on robotics.

Some were doubtful, but we’re not even done the current hype cycle, and robotics is now the next “it” thing.

Remember Meta’s much-vaunted fact-checking program?

It’s over. Toast. Done.

Since it’s no longer politically expedient, and Trump is again President, there’s no longer any incentive to call out lies and bullshit.

Just updated my LinkedIn bio because, why not?

A week ago, I asked how Atari could outdo 2024.

Well, at CES, it looks like they just did.

They’re releasing a portable console. And it features:

* Trak-Pad

* Paddles

* Numeric keypad

And that’s just the start!

I won’t lie—$1,099 for an 11” 144hz WQXA screen with, with 2TB of storage, is a killer deal. Plus, it has detachable controls.

The only thing keeping me away from it is lack of dual trackpads, which are now a non-negotiable for me.
