Their subtle touch is so often visible if we know what to look for, but it's situations like that where it's more obvious. Every hike I go on would be just about impossible if not for their efforts. They don't get enough praise.

I share this for 2 reasons.

I loved the hike & adore, well, rock. It's Earth's heart displayed for us to see.

The other reason is I'd stopped short, the sight invoking a section in A River in Each Hand, Book 2 in my Kovenlore Chronicles series. In fact, I'll need to tweak that description (that slide, though, is more recent). Real life, it's full of inspiration.

nostr:npub175l80yqmw7jrh79385lpcdaqdgwvxm25leflgqqedmjpkalphvnqyv55we nostr:npub15kly2awv6kgljmwffw4utk0ym0qgqxt7spj302u89376wanckpnq7gk35n It was beautiful, but as a Long Island kid transplanted to a rural town in a different state it wasn’t ideal. I might as well have been from NYC as far as other kids were concerned. At 15 I chose to return to the island and live with my father.

She moved me back there again for a few years in my early teens. Even so, the divorce dictated that I spend my summers on Long Island.

Ive now lived roughly the same amount of time in other states as I did there, but I'm still a NYer. Until I try to get a word in edgewise with my family. That's when I noticed I've slowed wat down. 🤣

nostr:npub10d5zhp5atut9hcmyyslxdr07s65tj45q72wxvg229ajwjvmpqugq6lvvxa I can't remember anything specific, but people from Rochester or Buffalo would occasionally have a slight accent or different word for something. For downstate, I think each borough has a difference in the way they speak, and maybe even different sections of Long Island have their specific differences.

nostr:npub175l80yqmw7jrh79385lpcdaqdgwvxm25leflgqqedmjpkalphvnqyv55we I was in Suffolk County, the farthest out from NYC. At the time, I viewed each borough as you neared the city has having a "thicker" accent. Me? I didn't think I had one. 🤣

If I hear someone from Suffolk County talk now I'm stunned. I'm remembering, though, that when I was a kid in the '60s that a lot of people from NYC were migrating to the suburbs in Suffolk. That's migration patterns and influences a lot. 😃

nostr:npub10d5zhp5atut9hcmyyslxdr07s65tj45q72wxvg229ajwjvmpqugq6lvvxa I find regional accents/pronunciation very interesting. Also the way people think of regions. People from the City think of it as the City and upstate, but as someone who grew up in central NY/ Finger lakes, upstate always meant something different to me.

nostr:npub175l80yqmw7jrh79385lpcdaqdgwvxm25leflgqqedmjpkalphvnqyv55we I'm not that familiar with western NY, but from living in the state I know New Yorkers think of it as very distinct.

At the time, I could differentiate between Long Islanders and New Yorkers (meaning the city). Upstate NY was again distinctly different, but I'd where do you draw the line? The Catskills are kind of a hybrid, the Adirondacks quite different again.

Now, living in the west, people around me often think of NY as NY and that's it, unless they've been there.

Do you post them on your website? That might work as fun extra content for readers.

nostr:npub15wtkkf7yxmea8g4mstwjlu4hsm40luj6f65m99hqjyjh7nes8eqstl7rek I've used a few. When I talk about my writing, in-particular certain books, I'll use them within the post. It never hurts to add visuals, both to interest readers and to appear in searches. Search engines love visual media.

Wow. You are impressively organized. 😊 I've never done mood boards, but I can see where they might help you get into the character's head space.

nostr:npub15wtkkf7yxmea8g4mstwjlu4hsm40luj6f65m99hqjyjh7nes8eqstl7rek Thank you. As I say, I'd never done one until a couple of years ago. They can act as advertising, I suppose, but, as you say, the act of creation helped focus me on her, on the plot. After all, Riparia's first novel was written in 2016, her mood board created in 2021. 😃

nostr:npub10d5zhp5atut9hcmyyslxdr07s65tj45q72wxvg229ajwjvmpqugq6lvvxa side note: at work I often read notes and things from people without much background in writing/language, and there are so many times I've seen people use jive instead of jibe. Actually, I've heard people use it in conversation too.

nostr:npub175l80yqmw7jrh79385lpcdaqdgwvxm25leflgqqedmjpkalphvnqyv55we I haven't run into that, that I've noticed, but I can visualize it happening. I catch myself on occasion using the wrong word.

I have to wonder how much of it originates first from speech. For instance, accent. I was raised in New York where dog sounds more like douhg. Similarly, a lazy "b" in jibe could become jive as we type what we hear in our head.

Kasaria Garthing isn’t introduced to the series until Book 5, but she’s the MC in it. She’s the one character who’s difficult to discuss without spoiling too much.

Her story, though, is about imposed magic, yet none to wield that’s her own. It’s about an expedition into the Lost Hills to retrieve a message written in Old Elf. It’s about hiding her past or face death.

Glistenelle Primara is the most powerful seeker of her generation. She can detect evil possessing magic from a great distance & assesses character with a touch, seeing it as dynamic colors.

Introduced in Book 1, she’s featured in Book 3, the prequel. She was the “spoiled rich girl” with an unlimited future—until she developed illegal magic. That led to the “bad deal” with the rebels.

Maniff has no last name when introduced in Book 1. He’s a seer & can see through the eyes of those he’s touched for up to a week.

His obvious education & vast knowledge, yet shadowy existence, are an enigma for Riparia. They’re two magnets repelling & attracting. He also knows a lot about outlawed magic & technology. He knows more than he should—about her.

Sorceress Crimson is mentioned in Book 1 & appears in Book 2 (these images). The lone sorceress among sorcerers at the Ministry of Magic’s Knoss Citadel, she knows nothing of her origins.

She possesses a non-evil ability that makes her suspect to the others. The lone companion she trusts is her crow, Mazatta. He has limited speech & came to her when she was a child. He never left.

I made my 1st mood board & character images a couple of years ago. For my series, Kovenlore Chronicles, I have 5, two of which I’ve never shared so here’s a fun thread.

This is for Riparia Dellbane & Book 1. She’s the series’ MC & appears on page 1 with her horse, Doppla. She’s a rebel courier who’s otherwise dropped out of life—until life finds her in all its fury.

So, last year was the hottest summer I can remember here. Not surprising with global warming. Today, though, is the first day of summer this year and I'm making chili for dinner because—it's freaking chilly outside, though it's the warmest day in days. 🤔
