The benefits of designing the life you want to live?

Being able to take a day off whenever you want and take your daughter to her sports competition. I wouldn't have remembered today if I'd worked, but I'll remember my daughter competing and she'll remember that I put her day above my own.

If you're not designing your own life, then someone else is.

It's a cool place, great hidden beaches among little coves dotted along the cliffs, bars, restaurants and some archaeological sites further inland.

Won a beer bong comp in a bar there once, against rugby players, one of my greatest triumphs. 😂

This year's Australian election is going to be a real Battle of Hogwarts affair, Harry Potter vs Voldemort.

Was also exited to hear the governor general was going to "dissolve the house of reps", but then saddened that's its only so they can get elected by idiots again. 😂

Thanks, it's been a long time coming. Lost a lot of trees, i hope your summer isn't too harsh.

It's raining.....and I'm actually emotional.

We haven't had rain in over four months and it's finally rained again, not light drizzle or fog, but big heavy drops. The kids are excited and cheering like they've never seen it before. I saw a Magpie looking at a puddle as if it had never seen one before, maybe it hadn't.

Never take water for granted.

Maybe it will trigger some dormant native seeds, some are only triggered by smoke. Could be interesting.

Is it Logical to Follow Ancient Dietary Laws?

Many religious dietary laws - such as kosher restrictions in the Bible - are often dismissed as outdated or purely spiritual commands. But what if these laws were based on practical wisdom rather than arbitrary divine decrees?

Modern science has validated some of these restrictions. Shellfish, for example, is a common allergen, and pork has been linked to inflammation and immune responses in some individuals. While ancient societies lacked microbiology, they observed patterns - certain foods made people sick, so those foods were prohibited.

However, arguing that these laws should be followed just because they appear in a religious text would be an argument from authority fallacy (Argumentum ad Verecundiam). Instead, we can avoid this fallacy by reasoning from first principles:

1. If some dietary laws were given for human well-being, then others may have similar but yet-undiscovered benefits.

2. The fact that a restriction lacks an obvious scientific explanation does not mean it is meaningless - just that we may not yet understand its purpose.

3. It is more rational to adhere to these laws proactively rather than risk unknown health consequences.

Of course, not all prohibitions should be taken at face value. For example, the phrase “Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk” appears multiple times in the Bible. The context suggests it may have been an idiom or cultural reference rather than a strict dietary law. Misinterpretations like this show that religious texts require careful contextual analysis, not blind adherence.

Conclusion: The most logical approach is neither blind obedience nor outright dismissal. Instead, we should recognize that ancient dietary laws likely reflect practical truths, validated by observation and experience. If science has already confirmed some of these restrictions, it is rational to consider that others may also serve a beneficial purpose - even if we don’t yet fully understand why.

Can't remember where read it, but the Abrahamic avoidance on pork my have stemmed from the destructiveness of pigs in marginal landscapes, possibly wasn't worth trying to raise them. Maybe a response to a farming/environmental problem they came up against.

I'd end up coming home with a dogsled team if I went to a shelter.

Took the kids down to a local park to see some re-enactors.

Had a chat, the kids got to hold the weapons and they experienced some firing. My son loves playing Napoleonic era video games, so he enjoyed it.

In Australia we play a version of Russian Roulette while driving, I call it Redgum Roulette.

You play by simply driving home under the overhanging branches of hundreds of drought affected Gumtrees. They tend to just randomly drop multi-tonne branches without warning when it's dry. It's great fun making it home without dying!

I fucking hate it. We only got PSN plus a few months ago so my son can play a few games with his friends, I've never liked the idea of rent to play. Streaming services, gaming subscriptions, it's double payment on everything and still shit.

The current Playstation Network outage really highlights how we don't really own our devices anymore, we just rent them.

Offline games on the console won't work without psn and you can't change offline settings without psn. Without permission you can't use your own media.
